I woke up one morning a few weeks ago to find a message from Anton on my cell phone. The message was, “You called?” I was more than a bit surprised because I knew for sure that I didn’t call him up. I checked the log of outgoing calls and, sure enough, a call to Anton’s number was the most recent item on the list.
Since I left the phone overnight on Speedy’s desk, and the househelp was already through cleaning everything outside the bedrooms by that time, I figured she might have accidentally pushed a button while cleaning and, hence, the recorded outgoing call. I sent a text message to Anton saying as much.
The incident brought to mind some strange things that happened to Alan’s wife last year. Like Alan, I am not a superstitious person. Although I KNOW that there are dimensions of experience beyond the physical realm (intelligence and emotions, for instance), I am an agnostic when it comes to the existence of ghosts or spirits. Meaning, I do not discount the possibility that they may exist but I have no direct proof that they do so I can’t say for a fact that they do exist.
A day or two later, I had forgotten the cell phone incident. Then, something happened last Thursday that was too hard not to connect with the earlier incident.
Speedy and I were at the kids’ school to pay the
fees for the summer activities tuition for the coming school year. Instead of having him drive me home, I asked Speedy to drop me off at Shopwise supermarket. Five minutes after he had driven off, I was rummaging inside my purse for my cell phone to call him up. I just remembered something and, me being me, I was likely to forget it after a while so the best thing to do was to tell him right there and then. In fact, as I write this entry, I cannot remember anymore what it was that I needed to tell him so urgently.
I fished out the cell phone, unlocked the keypad and saw that there was a call from Anton. Instead of sending a text message, I returned the call.
When I heard his voice, I said, “You called?”
Oh, my. What was I to think? What am I to think? To this day, I still haven’t figured out how those two incidents happened.
