Sam (watching the state visit to China on the evening news): “Mommy, ano’ng state visit (what’s state visit)?”
Me: “It’s a diplomatic function, actually. Effectively, a recognition of the statehood of the country visited.”
And then I went on to discuss the Philippines’ one-China policy and why there are no state visits to Taiwan. Sam was silent for a few seconds and, in those few seconds, a better and more realistic definition formed in my head.
Me: “Actually, a state visit is free travel for government officials and their cohorts.” I should have added free first class travel and accommodation.
Sam turned halfway around to look at me and said: “Tatakbo na lang akong president ng buong mundo (I’ll run for president of the entire world).”
Yeah. You go, girl.
