The first time is always memorable. First dance, first day of school, first horse ride, first trip to the beach, first time to drive a car, first time to cry over a boy, first time to fire a gun… even my first surgery is unforgettable. I can still remember my first day on my first job. And, decades later, my first day of teaching especially because it was a job I did not study for in college. More than that, I was going to teach a subject I never learned in school — the internet. What made the experience somewhat comfortable was that “internet” was combined with “law.” Still kind of daunting though, this thing about moving in unfamiliar territory.
But then again, I’ve had more than one job I never had any formal training for and that made them even more challenging. Writing for the print media, publishing on the internet… they never taught any of that in law school. In short, why not do more things for which I’ve had no formal education?
So, I come to the part when I can make excuses about not posting anything here for so many days. See, I am about to do another “first” again. For three days next week, I’m going to conduct photography workshops and I’ve been planning the syllabus. Isn’t that mind blowing? Me? Talking about photography in front of a crowd? When the idea was first broached to me, I didn’t even ask myself if I was qualified. Hell, no. My first instinct was to say yes and I even waived the professional fee (literally, by waving my hand) almost as soon as the question of remuneration was brought up. Why? Because it’ll be another first in my life. And I have enough bilib sa sarili to shirk from saying, “No, I can’t.” I don’t like admitting defeat even before I have tried and given it my best shot. Besides, it’s time to get out of the house more often. Speedy’s going ballistic with the home decorating expenses and going out more means I can’t stay home to supervise painters and wallpaper installers and landscapers… And I never allow work to be done unless I am present. So, there.
Why am I telling you? Because, later, I will publish the photography workshop syllabus here and maybe write about inputs from participants in the photography workshops. And those are things that might be of some use to you. :)
