Time was when pediatrics was, by itself, a specialty. A pediatrician was a specialist as opposed to doctors engaged in general practice.
These days, being a pediatrician doesn’t seem to carry a label of specialization anymore. There are specialized sub-fields like pediatric hematology, pulmonary pediatrics, pediatrics endocrinology and metabolism, interventional pediatric cardiology…
The good news is that the more specialized the field, the more knowledgeable — and competent — a pediatrician is. PRESUMABLY.
The bad news is that if a kid is ill and the illness is, as yet, unknown, the parents will have to consult with so many kinds of pediatricians to eliminate possibilities and to get the proper diagnosis. The more specialists are hired, the higher the medical cost.
I’m really not sure if all this is good or bad.
