When mosquitoes develop immunity

You probably won’t believe how many anti-mosquito contraptions we have in the house. We have citronella, we have mosquito coils and we have electric mats. The only thing we don’t have are window screens. Been there, done that — I refuse because they obstruct natural ventilation. So, I know how screens trap hot air inside the house.

And yet, despite all precautions against them, the mosquitoes attack. And I’m starting to wonder if they have developed immunity against everything meant to repel them. Why not, right? People develop immunity against drugs so they require higher and higher dosage. Why not mosquitoes? Or, maybe, mosquitoes are mutating. Maybe, there are new breeds that are born immune to mosquito coils and citronella and electric mats. Just as new strains of dengue develop, maybe, new breeds of mosquitoes are being born.

Okay, so we’re a little paranoid about mosquitoes. Sam was struck with dengue when she was five years old. So, go figure.

It’s possible you know. Just like how the ants in our house don’t just eat sweet stuff. Or that the elusive rat in our house eats soap in the failure to access any other food.
I swear the mosquitoes in our house are multiplying every time I spray Baygon. I use Off! as a desperate measure or citronella, but their scent stings my nose.

Oh sure, you are so right! Sometimes, I think, if creatures are here for a reason, what good reason do mosquitoes serve? Ehe, to ask an oft repeated question— what is their reason for being?

  3. curious_Girl, re ants: Gee, in your house, ants attack the vinegar. VINEGAR!

Crisma, I ask the same question about cockroaches and ants and houseflies. And termites.

    • Crisma says:

Though I still do not know the cockroaches’ purpose other than to be disease carriers— we’ve found an effective solution to ward them off: pandan leaves! Simply place pandan leaves in vases with some amt of water in places where cockroaches are known to frequent. Hate yata nila ang scent ng pandan leaves.

For mosquitoes naman, I know that where there are a lot of trees and plants, lots rin ang mosquitoes.
Try to eliminate their breeding places.

For termites naman, pwedeng cheap and environment friendly at hindi toxic na pang-control: sukang puti! Termites hate acidic soil. Just pour enough sukang puti in areas where you find the termites.

For ants naman, I’ve read that ants hate baby powder…try placing baby powder dun sa areas that ants visit and you will see na they will be driven away like mad.

mosquito larvae are the main food source of small fish, which is eaten by medium sized fish, which are devoured by bigger fish, which are caught by man. An adult mosquito cannot dive and bite the fish so it directs its wrath on man.

    Have a great day!

Too much ventilation may be the cause why mosquito mats and other mosquito repellents fail. Their effectiveness relies on how long they stay inside the room. They could be venting out of your windows before they can effectively circulate around the room.
