Despite the five-star name, there’s nothing hoity-toity about Waldorf salad. It’s easy to prepare using very basic ingredients. Oh, okay, walnuts may not be a basic item in the average Asian kitchen and they are a bit expensive in this part of the globe too, but… Did you know that you can buy walnuts by the gram in supermarkets these days? Buy only what a dish requires and you need not spend a fortune buying more than you need.

Traditionally made with apples, celery, walnuts and mayonnaise, I added diced chicken to my Waldorf salad to make it more appetizing for my very carnivorous husband. Without the chicken, I doubt if he would have touched it.
Ingredients
- 2 eating apples, peeled (or not), cut into 3/4-inch cubes and tossed with 2 tbsps. of lemon or lime juice
100 g. of walnuts, lightly roasted and very coarsely chopped
3/4 c. of diced cooked and seasoned chicken meat (mine was boiled but you can try grilled or broiled)
1/4 c. of diced celery
1/4 to 1/3 c. of mayonnaise
freshly ground black pepper
lettuce, to serve
Instructions
- Just toss everything together and serve on a bed of lettuce.
And that’s the shortest recipe I have every posted in this blog.
Prep time (duration): 15 minutes
Number of servings (yield): 2 to 3

Hi, Ms. Connie! Will any kind of apple do (fuji or the very red ones)? except siguro yung granny smith?
I used Fuji. I don’t recommend the tart ones that are used for baking.
Hi Ms. Connie and Cris Jose,
I tried red & fuji apples in waldorf salad, red apples is better.
Hi,
I am an Administrator for an engineering multinational and i work with engineers housed in shared accomodation. My office sits below two Filipino engineer’s apartment, and everyday, i get great smells of food. So today, i went over for lunch and asked how they cook their food…so they gave me a few recipes and directed me to this website…and the waldorf salad was the first recipe i came across, and am so happy! Thank you!
Oh my gosh, that is so heart-warming. Can you please extend my greetings to the two Filipino engineers?
I make myself waldorf salad every sunday for consumption for the entire week. I love walnuts but because it’s expensive, I use cashew nuts instead and if i don’t have apples, pineapple tidbits will do.
Happy healthy eating:)
I never thought this recipe is that easy and fast. I have candied walnuts (a little bit sweet), do you think it will work? Planning on making it tonight for my son’s 3rd birthday. Thanks Connie!
Ay you need unsweetened nuts (lightly salted is good) to contrast with the sweetness of the apples.
Tried it last night with roasted walnuts and it was wonderful. Simple, quick to make and delicious! Thanks Connie!
