While waiting for the Smart tech people to install my Smart Bro connection, there isn’t much that I can do in terms of blogging. Can’t upload photos, can’t view attachments in e-mails… Meanwhile, tragedy struck on Tuesday.
The househelper was going to walk Astro and I suggested that the other house helper take Poco the mini-pin for a walk too. For some reason, Astro attacked Poco and did not let go until he was dead. I didn’t know what was happening until the guys painting the exterior of the house started shouting. I ran upstairs, looked out the window but it was over by then.
Poco was Sam’s pet for ten years. She’s devastated and probably more so because Astro is her dog too. Not too many people are enamored with pitbulls, and I admit that Astro can play rough, but he has never done such violence before. We have been in this neighborhood less than a week and I don’t know how the move has affected his temperament. That and the constant flurry of activities because house renovation is still ongoing. I don’t know either what he saw during that fateful walk that could have provoked him. The house helpers said Poco kept peeing, and that’s his thing really as though to mark every place as his territory, and that was what appeared to have set off Astro.
I feel responsible because it was my idea that Poco be brought along. If I could bring time back, I would have rather have Poco die of old age.
If there are typos, it’s because it isn’t easy blogging using an iPhone. I hope that the next entry will be posted using Smart Bro. It’s what most neighbors use. Apparently, PLDT DSL is not the preferred Internet connection in the area. I can only hope that Smart Bro will be a more satisfactory service.
I won’t be able to repost my column (about the July 18 earthquake prediction of the DaRoose guy which has been a hot item on the web for the past few weeks) until I can blog using my Mac. I don’t think I copy/paste using the iPhone. You can read it in yesterday’s edition of Manila Standard Today in the opinion section.
Later.

Oh no!!! Connie, I’m so sorry to read this! I feel bad for Sam too for as you said, both are her pets!
Astro probably has been upset over the move and with both dogs probably trying to establish their “territory”, maybe that was what set him off.
It sounds like Astro isn’t the type to be around other dogs while he’s in this unsure state of mind. He definitely does need someone with a firmer hand to walk him tho.
I watched two days ago in Yahoo news on video that pitbulls are less likely to attack people and other animals compare to weiner duchhound and other smaller dog breeds, could it be that your dog is suffering from stress when you moved in.
cannis familiaris will and forever be territorial no matter how socialized- doubly true for pitts
Poco being “10″ in dog years not to old in my opinion but have had first hand experience and the scars to prove it that younger and stronger dog exercising their dominance over the “elders” most often has sad endings
…oh, scars since I was dumb enough to try and separate the “sausage” dogs…..
Oh, I am so sorry to read about that unfortunate incident. Though of course, this is not something new to me since the pitbull we gave my parents also did that to my mom’s favorite old dog and my mother was really fuming mad.
I hope Sam is ok.
Oh, this is really devastating. Got misty eyed as I read this post. I’m so sorry, Sam.
I’m so sorry about Poco. Poor thing!
Poor Poco. A suggestion since he’s shown a propensity to attack small things when upset, maybe a muzzle when he’s being walked in public. Oh gosh, I can only imagine how upset Sam is. Hugs for her.
I’m soooo sorry to hear about Poco. I have a dog too and it really saddens me that he passed away. Dogs give unconditional love. I’m sure Poco is in a better place now.
That is so sad but I think it would have happened anyway given another opportunity. You’re not to blame for suggesting walking them both at the same time. Animals react sometimes extremely to changes in the environment. Our dog kicked the bucket; another run away after New Year’s eve. The fireworks must have gotten to them.
Hope Sam feels better soon.
Sorry to hear about that Connie. That is not the first time i’ve heard of an incident involving a mini pincher and a larger dog. A friend of mine had a mini pin and a german sheperd, whenever the german shepered managed to sneak into the house it went directly for the tiny dog. Twice the mini pin survived, but on the 3rd time, she was a goner. Really not sure why. Now, they have a new mini pin and 1 new german shepered and an ambull. So far they’ve been kept apart. Hopefully it stays that way.
I hope Sam feels better soon.
Sam & Connie, sorry to hear of what happened to Poco. I knew the feeling. When my son’s 14 year old dog was put to sleep, my daughter and wife were really sad. He was like family – we even called him Buff Monreal.
I remember how we cried for our Poochie to think that we only had him for over a year. If I’ll get another pet, we would still name him/her the same.
But oh well, I admire your patience, I can’t manage to blog properly with my iPhone. My fingers can take it only for short email responses and comments.
I’m really really sorry to hear that. =(
I am so sorry to hear that Connie. You had no way of predicting it was going to happen. It is really tragic. We’ve always had dogs in the Philippines and I’ve witnessed dog fights a lot of times but nothing as terrible as the other dog getting killed.
So sorry to hear about your pet’s demise.
Question: were you ever able to connect your Mac to the internet using your Smart 3G phone?
Thank you all. Sam is back to her normal self although she’s whining for another dog on her birthday.
Paul, no. Tried using Sam’s K800i but it didn’t work. Smart’s tech people said the service is unstable with Leopard.
Really? I had no problems using Smart 3G on my Mac running Tiger (10.4.11).
I’ll try doing so on an iMac running Leopard one of these days.
Yep, tried it three times. Step by step. Smart tech on my Sun line while using my the K800i with my Smart sim as modem. Didn’t work. Chin Wong said he could do it with the Nokia n95. Dunno if he uses Leopard though.
I think you need to install a modem script for your K800i. I had to do that too for my old Nokia 6630 as well.
You might find these instructions on how to connect to Smart 3G via Bluetooth with your Mac from my blog useful: http://www.unlawyer.net/?p=1001.
Thanks, Paul. Considering that DSL is not a viable option in the neighborhood, getting the phone to work as a modem is the best alternative internet connection for me.
Very sorry to hear about your pet dog. Had 2 bad experiences with pitbulls that’s why I don’t like them. One was same case with your pet Poco. The other, just recently, was with our pet chowchow. Buti na lang matapang at nakadiskarte ng maayos yung chowchow namin; knagat niya between the eyes AND didn’t let go till the freakin’ pitbull whinned like hell and decided to give up. That showed him who’s boss.
Anyway, still very sad to hear about Poco.
oh no….
