TV, advertising and children

Two nights ago, I was scouting for a domain name for Speedy. Yes, I have finally convinced him to try blogging. Tough finding a good domain name that is still available. A lot of good domain names are just parked and some are being used for seemingly unrelated things. Many domain names with “daddy” are actually porn sites.

I was running out of ideas when I remembered that I have mommytalks.com. Okay, so it’s just sitting there waiting for some spark of inspiration to hit me. Or, maybe, I won’t keep it anymore since everything that was there are already in this blog and what I intended mommytalks.com to be is now Pinoy Moms Network. Anyway, I figured it would be a good idea to register daddytalks.com and daddytalks.net for Speedy. Daddytalks.com is taken and I didn’t bother to check daddytalks.net anymore. I’ve learned my lesson — register both the .com and .net domains. It was a painful lesson I learned with Pinoy Cook.

In the course of checking, I visited Daddytalks.com. It’s a (non-local) parenting blog written by a dad. The about page says it is really meant to serve as a portal for fathers around the world. There aren’t too many entries there for a one-year old blog but something did catch my attention — does watching television make kids fat? It links to a report that says the Federal Communications Commission (in the U.S.) planned to “study links between the ads, viewing habits and the rise of childhood obesity.”

I don’t know what happened to that September 2006 plan. However, it piqued my interest.

Sam and Alex grew up at a time when there weren’t any ads on cable channels. That’s why I never discouraged them from watching Disney and Nickelodeon. In fact, Speedy and I shared their enthusiasm with programs like Art Attack and, believe it or not, Speedy spent many, many hours watching Spongebob Squarepants with Alex.

Among the local programs, the girls watched Sineskwela which, in the second half of the 1990s, was not the junk that it became after the turn of the millenium. I don’t remember what kind of ads they used to show with Sineskwela.

Too late to wonder now but not too late to see what ads are being shown on Disney and Nickelodeon programs today. Yeah, they are still staples for Sam and Alex at 14 and 13, respectively. Which means I will probably be spending more time watching The Suite Life of Zach and Cody, Raven, Kim Possible and Totally Spies if only to find out.

Oh, and yes, I did manage to register a good domain name for Speedy. Got both the .com and .net accounts too. :)

hi Connie. hooray for the blog for Speedy. hmm, let me guess the domain name: speedydaddy.com? hehe, i can only guess. but seriously, i noticed that in the blogsphere, they are less daddies blogging. i only know a few, and can’t help but admire them. sabi ko, they must have been “one in a million” :)

and oh, Nick and Disney babes pa rin pala sina Alex and Sam. must be the plots of the programs you mentioned. i find myself fondly tuning in to Nick and Disney too, even if the programs are most often re-runs. :) isip bata talaga. would you believe, we watched High School Musical and Princess Diaries over and over. at si SpongeBob, i got to know him better. thanks to my son whose an avid fan. kala ko salbahe sya, mabait naman pala si SpongeBob. :)

if i remember it right, most of the ads are toys, diapers, cereals, and milk.

I let my son watch telly and since it’s digital, I can control what shows he can watch by scheduling them (Dora, Diego, Lazytown, etc). We have freeview channels some of which have ads but mostly toys or their shows so they’re relatively harmless.

I don’t stock sweets (except halloween leftovers) or crisps. Wala syang choice for snacks other than fruits or biscuits. Since toddler, malakot & he loves running around in the garden.

Kung ang bata kahit sa computer nakababad, lethargic at puro junk ang kainin talagang magiging obese. Dito din rising problem ang child obesity but then most kids want to stay indoors & just play on their consoles.

feng, alam mo ba na ang first choice ko was daddyspeedy.com? hehehehe ayaw nya eh LOL basta cute yung na-register ko and I’ll make a HUUUUUGE announcement when it’s ready to go public. Naku, baka ma-tense yun ah hehehe Honestly I’m just so excited.

auee, one thing I noticed… as more and more houses are built, they get smaller and smaller.Swerte na nga kung merong pocket garden. Smaller house equals less space to move around in.

Alam ko na una mong comment kay speedy. “Makibaka, wag matakot”. hehehe

Welcome to the blog world, Speedy! Dumadami na rin tayong nagsusulat na mga tatay.

  6. Sam says:

Congratulations to Speedy for his impending entry into the blogosphere! Can’t wait myself…
My kids indeed love Nick (our cable package does not include Disney, too bad). And the only one gaining weight from all the watching is the Mom…

Hi Connie. I have 2 preschoolers (4yrs and 2yrs old) and I allow them to watch both Disney and Nickolodeon but only on certain hours. I don’t like some of the programs that show a certain amount of violence and the shows where the characters are sassy. You know how it is with kids, they pick up these things really fast. Haven’t you noticed that they sometimes sound like their favorite cartoon characters. When the “bawal” shows are on I encourage my girls to play outside or do some artwork. If they really are in the watching mood, I just pop a DVD of Disney, Barney, Dora, or some dinosaur movie.

Wow, blogging family na kayo! We used to have cable tv but that would mean more tv viewing time for the kids and us so we decided to just stop having it. They just get to watch their favorite programs on DVD. As for snacking, they always have cookies, fruits and more cookies. I know these can be sugar-loaded too but these are more filling than candies. Good thing they (DD1 11yo and DS 5yo) don’t usually believe in ads, but my DD2 4yo does.

  9. Connie says:

tito rolly, it’s a good thing that he has daddy-bloggers like you to connect with. :) when i started, there was only batjay hehehe and yuga hahahaha

LOL Sam, I can imagine you munching while watching Nick Toons with them hehehehe

Kongkong, naku, they pick up the lines fast indeed. the expressions they repeat sometimes makes me do a double take.

julie, you know, even sugar-loaded but NATURAL is preferable to mow-sugar but high-sodium and ARTIFICIAL snacks. Natuto na nga ako mag-bake hehehehe

Hey, why not all our hubbies put up their blogs too? Then they can have a network too, like ours! Then perhaps we can eavesdrop to some of their secrets.. hahaha!

Congrats to Speedy! That could be considered as an advanced Fathers’ Day gift, right, Connie? :)

  11. Connie says:

That’s what I told him — Father’s Day gift. Initially, I said birthday gift but then I changed my mind and said the birthday gift would be something tangible. He said, “Like a Mac?” And I said, “Yeah, maybe I’ll give you my Mac.” Then he panicked thinking I’d give him my Mac and insist that he buy me a MacBook Pro hahahahaha

  12. rhodora says:

Hahahaha! Ang galing na strategy nyan!

hay naku, so true about the .com and .net. i cant even recover .com pa rin all these years na hindi ko na sya narenew kasi hindi na namin maalala yung info namin when we registered it. kakainis talaga. kakainis…

  16. auee says:

sassy same here… The closer you are to London, the higher chance you won’t have a garden. We moved to East London in the Essex county so we’ll have better value for our money.

  17. Connie says:

ate sienna, the one who got the .com is just sitting on it, ano?

auee, so urbanization can also be a factor because of the “shrinking” personal space.

  18. Rach says:

Hi Connie. I don’t have a personal domain but I find the idea very interesting and I’m looking into it myself. Thanks for the tips you mentioned regarding maintaining domains of your choice. How nice that many members in your family enjoy blogging.

It was wonderful meeting you in person. I enjoyed our lunch and I look forward to the exciting goals we have talked about. Hope everything will work out for the best. Take care and have a great week ahead.
