Yesterday was the last day of the 2007 World Pyro Olympics. We had been planning on this one-of-a-kind photo opportunity for weeks and, having been advised by friends who have seen the previous events, we wanted to get to the Mall of Asia as early as possible. As things would have it, that just wasn’t possible. My husband and I spent the morning at the kids’ school for a parent-teacher conference for the second trimester and it was already early afternoon when we got home. Instead of having lunch at home, we decided we would save precious time by leaving right away and have lunch at the mall.
The girls were screaming burgers and fries but it was our first time at the Mall of Asia and we didn’t want to spend hours just looking for a burger-and-fries place. When we saw Teriyaki Boy, we decided to forgo the burger-and-fries idea. I thought the girls would object but they’re such tempura addicts. Besides, it was 4.00 p.m. and our stomachs were growling.
It wasn’t as though we were experimenting with a new restaurant. My husband had tried Teriyaki Boy before and said it was pretty good especially considering that the prices are about 50% lower that premium Japanese restaurants. So, it wasn’t really all that hard getting everyone to agree. We went in, looked at the menu and chose what to indulge ourselves with. We ordered California maki for starters, the girls had shrimp tempura, I had a bowl of gyoza udon and my husband ordered chicken don with rice.
The food at Teriyaki Boy is not comparable in quality to the kind of food served at Furusato or Sugi. There aren’t too many items to choose from and they don’t serve the really exotic Japanese dishes with expensive ingredients. I suppose that’s the secret behind the cheaper prices. The principle behind Teriyaki Boy is like choosing Japanese dishes that have already proven popular with Filipino diners and putting them in one menu.
An a la carte meal at Teriyaki Boy is definitely much, much better than a buffet meal at Saisaki. When the girls’ shrimp tempura was served, the first thing they checked was whether there were whole srimps inside the crisp coating. They were happy that they got whole shrimps. See, they have a bad experience with Saisaki. The last time we were there, they discovered that the tempura only had half shrimps—the shrimps were split lengthwise in two then coated with batter. So, they developed this habit of checking whether they’re getting whole shrimps in their tempura. And we’ve never gone back to Saisaki since.
My husband enjoyed his chicken don tremendously. And I was very happy with my gyoza udon.
The bill was a little over PhP 1,000.00. Considering that we had two orders of California maki, shrimp tempura, the chicken don and the gyoza udon plus bottomless iced tea, the price wasn’t bad at all.

hi,
I totally agree, the shrimp tempura in teriyaki boy are not disappointing.
btw, I made mango jango for my daughter’s birthday party yesterday by following your daughter’s recipe, and I am happy to say that it was such a hit. However, some of the guests told me that they hesitated to get a slice of it at first bec. they didn’t want to ruin the “presentation”.
Again, that’s thanks to you and your daughter.
Hi Connie. Did you get good pics of the fireworks?
I’ve always enjoyed going to Teriyaki Boy. I really like their chicken teriyaki, but what i can’t go without is their tofu steak. I’ve tried to recreate it a couple of times but just can’t get it right. Too bad about that Saisaiki experience of yours. I never noticed that about the Tempura. I guess i just like the never ending sashimi and sushi.
Lemon, she will be tickled pink to know that. Wow. I’m so proud of her. If only she would make less kalat when experimenting in the kitchen.
peterb, yes, the fireworks photos are up. Not yet finished uploading though.

Hahaha. That’s what my hubby says about my kitchen kalat too. Pls. tell your daughter that I’ll be waiting for those delectable works of art to be featured by her equally talented mom.
lemon, ooh she’s into photography these days, pestering me to buy her a DSLR camera which I won’t—yet—unless and until she is sure that that is what she wants to do professionally. last year, she was going to be a chef; this year, a photographer. LOL
