Waiting for the fish to cook

speedy-sam-veneracionAlthough it isn’t Sunday and Speedy normally cooks only on Sundays, he took exception today because he was just as excited about dinner as I was. He grilled a kilo and a half of panga ng tuna. And while we normally switch on the capiz lamps on the mango tree unless we’re having dinner al fresco, with guests or even when there’s just us, Speedy the panikero over electricity consumption kept them on because he was grilling the fish in the garden.

Barbecue, with style

grillingIt’s been raining for over two weeks and we haven’t done any grilling for just as long. This photo was taken on the same day that we gad the grilled liempo accompanied by a simple garden salad. What’s with the chair and the industrial fan? Oh, that’s how Speedy does the grilling. Last Sunday’s lunch

grilled-pork-belly2I don’t know whether he was avoiding the heat in the kitchen or he was just craving for liempo but Speedy decided we would have grilled liempo (pork belly) for lunch last Sunday. I decided to make it a total experience by having lunch laid out in the garden. Delicious!

How seriously do you follow a loved one’s final wish?

My father told me that he wanted to be cremated and his ashes scattered along the ridge of Tagaytay City overlooking Taal volcano. I had two small children when he died, couldn’t manage the long drive to Tagaytay and the best I could do was scatter his ashes on the hillsides of Antipolo. I knew ... (more)

The suikinkutsu project

Of the five elements — and note that the Five Elements in Chinese and Japanese philosophies differ — it is water that I associate with the feeling of relaxation. Wind is exhilarating, fire is exciting, earth is nurturing, Ku is… I don’t associate it with anything because I don’t know exactly what it is. Of ... (more)
