Harbor View: great food, great view, great service

harbor-view3

If you’re familiar with the restaurants and bars in the Roxas Boulevard-Rizal Park area, you might have heard of Harbor View. It’s been there for decades. I used to go there with friends long ago but, by that time, the place was beginning to show the telltale signs of wear and tear. I don’t remember ... (more)

Sometimes, the most interesting photos are the ones you took unintentionally

manila-bay-sunset

Yesterday, Speedy and I went out on a whim. No real plans. Just eat and take photos. We were at the Manila Bay breakwater before sunset and we tried to find a good spot so that we’d have our cameras ready by the time the sun starts to sink below the horizon. In the tropics, ... (more)

On the way to Chinatown

I think I like the kind of college education that Sam is getting. In her History class, part of the final exam is a paper on cuisine. I don’t know exactly how it goes but the paper entails experiencing cuisine, taking photos (Sam is a Photography major, after all) and writing about the experience with ... (more)

Someone wants a Speedlite Flash for her birthday

Sam is on YM and asking for the birthday gift that I’m still saving up for — a flash for her dSLR. Of course, I’m going to get her one — she’s taking up A.B. Photography after all so I can’t say that a flash is a luxury. She’ll need one pretty soon for school ... (more)

Room with a view

I’ll be writing about the 1986 film version in a few days after I’ve had a chance to see it (bought the DVD last weekend which was on sale at Astrovision) but, for now, let me just use the title to describe this photo taken by Sam from her dorm room’s window.

The front doors of the Manila Cathedral

manila-cathedral-artI’m no church goer and I often cringe at the extravagance of Catholic churches which, I feel, is too ironic considering the simple life that Jesus lived. But the last time we were at the Manila Cathedral, I was still awed by the beauty of the reliefs on the front doors. And I was all prepared to rave thinking they were done by a Filipino artist. But they weren’t.

Manila by night

manila-by-nightThere are lots of reasons why I wanted to post this photo. First, I waited more than two weeks to take it. I stayed with Sam on her first night at the condo and when I saw the view from the balcony, I swore that I’d bring a camera next time and have a ball capturing the city lights of Manila by night.

Second, I stayed in that condo for an entire day while Sam was at school and the experience was both surprising and unsettling.

Children as learning prompts

(Today’s column — the photos only appear on this blog entry) If you’ve been to the Manila Cathedral in Intramuros in Manila, you might have noticed the statue at the center of the plaza in front of it. That statue is also in front of the Palacio del Gobernador which stands perpendicular to the cathedral. ... (more)
