What were you doing on September 23rd in 2007, 2008, 2009 and 2010?

September23

If you’re a new reader, I’ll tell you something that everyone else probably knows already — I take photos everyday. Well, almost everyday. I have to make exceptions for the days when I was sick like that time when a horrid (kidding!) doctor took out my gall bladder and I felt my mortality a hundred ... (more)

The controversial talumpunay (angel’s trumpet) and some thoughts on drug addiction

The time we bought fruit trees to plant in the garden, Speedy bought a talumpunay (sometimes spelled talampunay) tree. He planted it in a far corner of the garden near the gazebo that we converted into an outdoor kitchen. It’s grown big, it’s thriving and it’s flowering. The scientific name is Datura metel, there are ... (more)

Name 5 things you can live without

Two nights ago, Speedy and I were watching TV in the family room when Alex walked in. Wearing an expression that was a picture of disgust and tension, she asked, “May utak ba ang butiki (Do lizards have brains)?” She and I both knew it was a DUH question and she was just being sarcastic ... (more)

Summer used to mean outdoor activities

Over the past few months, water supply in our subdivision is cut off at night and I have been unable to invite my mother, who lives in the city, to spend a few days with us this summer as she requires running water 24/7. I told her about our water situation and, just yesterday, she ... (more)

Building an outdoor kitchen

gazebo-outdoor-kitchen-8Speedy always intended to construct a movable (rolling) cooking station using the cooking hob and oven from the old house. It would have been swell to put it next to be gazebo so we could cook and eat outdoors without too much going back and forth. But, for more than a year, the project kept getting pushed aside…

So, the gazebo turned into a white elephant. For months. Until inspiration struck. I’d construct an outdoor kitchen right there. Easy enough to set up the table and chairs under the mango tree for dining.

Home-grown lime

limeThe kaffir lime keeps dying on me but the native lime tree is now bearing fruits. Pretty soon, I won’t have have to use bottle lime juice to make my Silom Sunrise. I’ll just have to go to the garden, pick a lime or two off the tree, cut them and squeeze them… ahhh, the thought is so wonderful. Fresh fruits. From my garden…

But what’s Silom Sunrise? Ooohh, you don’t know?

The dragon in my garden

dragonFeng shui believers and practitioners say it is lucky if your house or building stands on a lot with a dragon underneath. But it is unlucky if the house or the building is right above the head of the dragon. Or something like that. But what if the dragon on your property is suspended in air and right beside your house?
