Re-decorating a teener’s bedroom, Broadway style

Two things: First, I often submit photos to Photo Friday‘s weekly challenges. Been doing so for the past several months. Not always. But often. Second, Alex is taking up Theater, not Film. Is there a connection? Of course, or I wouldn’t have mentioned them one after the other. This week’s Photo Friday challenge is Reflect. ... (more)

About the newspaper columns

In July, 2005, my first opinion column was published in Manila Standard Today. Because it was an offshoot of A sassy lawyer in Philippine suburbia blog, the name “Sassy Lawyer” was retained. Over the next four years and nine months, I would also write feature articles for the paper, mostly travel-related. Once, a photo I ... (more)

If I believed in karma, this would be it

Most people who read my blogs know that I work from home. If you’re not among them, well, I do. Work from home. Or work at home. Whichever the more grammatically correct phrase is. Many have commented at my “enviable” situation and I do have to admit that working from home has its perks. One, ... (more)

A taste of the empty nest syndrome

[Republished from yesterday's op-ed column] Early in February, on the way to a UP College of Law reunion, my friend, fellow law alumnus and fellow Antipolo resident Eric Santos and I drove through Global City. I told him how much I liked the way the community was planned and laid out. I wouldn’t mind living ... (more)

Play to win

[Note: The following article was published in Code Red magazine. I wrote it a couple of months ago and I wasn't really planning on republishing it here, but I am in the midst of making yet another tough career decision and it just seems relevant, for me at least, to be reminded of what I ... This future filmmaker doesn’t need hair dye to be fashionable

Women dye their hair for different reasons — to hide the gray, as part of a costume or for fashion. Among Asian women, it’s all the rage to have light brown hair with golden streaks these days. But Alex doesn’t need hair dye to have fashionable hair color. She has natural chestnut brown hair, highlighted ... (more)

Just when I thought I hit a plateau…

Below is a screen shot of the index page of Pinoy Cook (Home cooking rocks!) as it appears today. If the text is too small, you can click here to read the entry. If you know of anyone who is an opinion columnist and a lifestyle columnist at the same time, please let me know ... (more)

Excuse me while I brush up on my photography skills

Starting today, I am obliging myself to take at least a dozen photos everyday of various subjects and using different photography techniques. My writing career is taking another twist and, this time, my writing will be accompanied by my photos. No, not another blog but another print media gig. I’ll tell you about it when ... (more)

Taste test

Speedy likes to tell people that he and the girls are my guinea pigs. I like experimenting in the kitchen and they are the ones who decide which make it to the food blog. Not actively decide but, you know, I can always tell whether they like a dish or not. If no one is ... (more)

First day of the Christmas break

I woke up late, had coffee and breakfast with Speedy (he still has to go to work today and it’s their company’s Christmas party tonight), then started checking my e-mail. I read for a few hours. The neighbor started playing the radio full blast, Alex was roused from sleep and was angry. I called the ... (more)

About security of tenure

… in terms of security of tenure, is it really true that self-employment is too risky? Labor laws notwithstanding, if we look at most corporate set-ups especially in the Philippine setting, capability and skill are not the only factors on which security of tenure are anchored. Things like PR (sucking up), knowing and hanging out with the “right crowd” and learning the art of not stepping on the toes of the wrong people affect an employee’s chances of staying on and moving upward.
