Hidden meanings and violence in children’s literature

On Sunday evening, my daughter Alex sat down next to me in my study with Neil Gaiman’s “M Is For Magic” in her hands. Apparently, a lot of nursery rhymes were referenced in the short stories and, not being familiar with many of them, she decided it was more convenient to ask me rather than ... (more)

The walk out

alex-mango-juiceThat day we went to see District 9 at Eastwood City, and Alex and I walked out halfway through the screening, we went to Cheesecake, etc. to while away the hour to let Speedy and Sam finish the movie. We each had a cake…

Define misanthropy

Alex is very much into non-fiction these days. Danielle Steel, to be more precise, whose novels I never read although I did see the film version of “The Promise” when I was very young. As it turns out, based at least on the questions that Alex asks, some of Steel’s novels are set in interesting ... (more)

Yesterday, Alex handed me a greeting card with a reproduction of an oil painting of Mayon Volcano and said it was from the museum. ... (more)

Digital photo times two

nokia-cam-phoneOne question I’ve often been asked is where I get ideas for photography subjects. From anything and everything, actually. All things are interesting depending on how you see them and how you compose your photos around them.

Babs and Black-Eye

stuffed-toysLast week, Alex spent an afternoon and part of the evening with friends at Eastwood City. Movie, dinner… It was a despedida affair for a classmate whose family is migrating to Canada. She said they had fun — but the surprising thing was how she remembered her father and me through all that fun. She came home with a huge bag that contained two stuffed toys. The piglet is for Speedy and me; the dog is for herself.
