It’s amusing to go over the names of cocktail drinks — many have sexual references, some are fanciful and nostalgic while others are simply romantic. Common denominator? Most cocktail drink names don’t give a hint of the ingredients in them.
Perhaps, the mystery is part of the allure. Perhaps, the average person doesn’t really care about the ingredients. In fact, I have a strong suspicion that the average person is not familiar with cocktail mixers and other ingredients, and they choose their drinks from the menu based on the name that attracts their attention. Of course, that doesn’t include the ones who go to a bar and order without bothering to look at the menu because they know exactly what they want and they rarely deviate from their usual.
So, I was thinking of all that when I was mixing this drink earlier. It is an original recipe — mine — so, until I hit the “Publish” button, it is an unknown and unnamed drink. I get to name it. And I wondered how I should name it. Should I use a name that is descriptive of its ingredients? Or should I follow the common practice of using a catchy phrase? I decided to go for the latter because I wanted a unique name.
Made with passion fruit concentrate, ginger ale and coconut rum, this cocktail drink is sweet and aromatic. The taste of alcohol is almost indiscernible. You wouldn’t know it’s an alcoholic drink until you feel a buzz after the second glass. I’m calling it Suburban Sunshine that’s how it looks to me.
Recipe: Suburban Sunshine
Instructions
- Place three to four ice cubes in each of two glasses.
- Mix together the passion fruit concentrate and coconut rum. Divide between the two glasses.
- Top with ginger ale. Serve.

Preparation time: 2 minute(s)
