My 13-year-old daugher Sam had a bad craving for maki today. Not just to eat maki but to make them. She’s done it several times before and I must say she’s getting really good at it. She said all her muscles hurt from the rigorous summer soccer training but I really don’t know how the aching muscles could have affected her taste buds. I made a huge tray of baked macaroni for lunch, enough to last through dinner, but while her sister feasted on the pasta, Sam hardly ate all day. She ate when she got home at around 10.00 a.m. from the soccer field, slept for a few hours, showered and then she seemed to have lost her appetite.
She sent some SMS to her father asking him to buy nori, crabsticks and ripe mangoes on his way home from work. But by 7.00 p.m., he called up to say he couldn’t find nori in two supermarkets and to tell Sam he would try again tomorrow. When he got home, I think he couldn’t stand seeing her sad and unable to eat. After a quick meal, he went out again to search for nori. It was almost 9.00 p.m. when he returned. Well, Sam was still in the mood for making maki. And the thing is, her dad, her sister and I were all in the mood to eat the maki.

Your daugther’s got skills! I am very impressed with her. Tha maki looks yum!
A familiy event! Your husband was so sweet to have gone out again and get the nori.
Those are awesome shots, Sassy.
Actually, pinayhekmi, she’s entertaining thoughts of going to a culinary school after high school. I promised her we’d find the money if that’s what she really wants. hmmm… she might take over my food blogs by then.
Thanks, Toni, I think fathers are worse suckers when daughters display long faces. Although they fight silly in the mornings because it is such an effort to get Sam out of bed on schooldays LOL
You have a precious girl ,Sassy!when I was 13,all i could do in the kitchen was to cook rice, sunog pa! haha
tgif, happy weekend:)
she’s got daddy wrapped around her fingers eh?
looks good.
I read somewhere that they will open a culinary school in Manila which will have the same standard as the Swiss and French cooking schools.
Very healthy food! Looks yummy!
cheH, now that you mention rice… that’s my waterloo. without a rice cooker, kundi sunog sinaing ko, hilaw naman! LOL
dexie, yep, just like i had mine hehehehe
Sidney, there’s the Center for Culinary Arts in Katipunan Avenue. You’re referring to one newer than that? “same standard as the Swiss and French cooking schools” sounds grand!
Yes, it is a new project by OFW’s. With Filipinos everywhere in the world (even in the White House kitchen) this would be a great initiative. Imagine the label “Filipino cook” equal to his European contreparts.
Wow, that is such welcome news, Sidney. My daughter is an incoming high school sophomore… I do hope that the new school fully be fully operational by the time she graduates from high school. Wonderful news! Thanks.
Your site inspired me to roll my very first maki. Here’s my own blog and I hope it’s okay that I mentioned you in my entries.
