Shopping for cookware

There will be another sale on November 12-15, 2009. Click here for details.

What I really wanted was a Le Creuset but that can wait. Meanwhile, I spent an obscene amount of money shopping for cookware today. I would have spent more had I bought them at their regular prices. Fortunately, I only paid a fraction because there’s this fantastic bodega (warehouse) sale at the Cybermall in Eastwood City. I bought so much not just for home use but for gift-giving on Christmas. That’s how I ended up spending all that money — part of it was Christmas shopping. I can’t show you the items that I intend to give to friends and relatives but I can tell you about the cookware I bought.

Pyrex non-stick cookware with lids

When it comes to non-stick cookware, I have been a Tefal loyalist for more than a decade. My only issue against Tefal is that most of its pans do not come with lids. Until today, I had no idea that Pyrex made non-stick cookware. I have always associated Pyrex with glass ovenware but not with non-stick woks, casseroles and pans. Pyrex non-stick cookware do come with lids and the quality, including the thickness of the metal and the ergonomic design of the handles, convinced me to buy a 34-cm wok (P2,750.00), a 26-cm frying pan (P1,300.00), a 22-cm casserole (P1,850.00) and an 18-cm sauce pan (P1,500.00). They’re made in Italy and they come in a very classy silver-gray finish.

Corningware casseroles

I also bought a couple of Corningware casseroles — the kind that can go directly from the freezer to the stove top or the oven. They can be washed even when still hot and they are dishwasher safe too. I already have two square Corningware casseroles but they are rather small so the ones I bought today are larger — a 5-liter (P1,950.00) and a 2.25-liter casseroles (P950.00).

It wasn’t just cookware that I bought. I also bought small cooking utensils — a grater, a paring knife, measuring cups and spoons, a flour sifter and a whisk.

whisk

I do have a great wire whisk but since it’s metal, I cannot use it with non-stick pans and ceramic casseroles. So, I bought the great looking whisk by Pyrex that you see above — for P100.00, believe it or not.

The bodega sale lasts until Sunday, November 18th, at the third floor of the Cybermall at Eastwood City. It’s not a regular shop so don’t expect to find a cookware shop there after the 18th. It’s only there for the duration of the sale. Actually, I’m thinking of going back sometime during the weekend. There were a couple of small items that I thought we didn’t need only to find out from my husband later on in the day that he could no longer locate the cork screw, etcetera, etcetera…

Ang cute naman ng bago mong caldero set Ate Connie! Exciting! Shopping for cookware is really such a fun topic for me. But the twist is I like to buy high quality stuff for cheaps. ;)

  2. Michelle says:

    Hi
I checked the price here in france of the le creuset. and you’re right it’s expensive. around 125 euro each the cheaper model.

but my husband said it’s really good the result if the food is cooked there.

it’s a good thing that by january there would be sale here maybe i’ll get one for roasting chicken hehehe

  3. Janete says:

Naku, I can relate to you Connie. I go crazy over kitchen gadgets kya I avoid going to the store unless I really have to. There’s going to be a HUGE sale after Thanksgiving and pera lang tlaga wala. LOL!

  4. Michelle says:

here in france there is also the same cookware like le creuset but not branded but i guess made of the same material which is cheaper, one casserole costs 30 euros

  5. Connie says:

So do I KK, so when the price of high quality stuff goes down by 50% to 70%, I buy in bulk. I doubt I would have bought more than one kaserola if not for the super slashed down prices hehehe

Michelle, lucky you that you can buy Le Creuset on sale. I’m still trying to figure out the best way to get them.

Janete, actually I was planning on buying Corelle dinnerware, not all that cookware. But the prices were so good and we really need cookware more than dinnerware. Swerte lang talaga na may cookware dun. I was only expecting to find Corelle stuff.

  6. Julie says:

Hubby got me a pretty blue Le Creuset dutch oven for…I forgot, annniversary gift yata, he knew that I’d been long lusting for one. He didn’t get it at full retail price though, ’cause they are really expensive; don’t laugh, but he got it at Costco (warehouse club) & if I’m not mistaken it’s a 5qt one. Calphalon now also makes enameled cast iron dutch ovens too, *slightly* cheaper than Le Creuset but surprisingly, can withstand oven heat up to 500F. Le Creuset is only good up to 400F. I’m a “kitchen dork” so I really enjoyed reading about your new pots/pans! Hope Santa will get you your Le Creuset if not this year, maybe next year!

  7. soloops says:

    I’m positively green, Ms. Connie!

  8. Josie says:

Like you, Connie, I didn’t know Pyrex made non-stick cookware. I like that wok. And I find the Corningware caseroles so practical to use, and pretty, too. I’ve been using them for ages. Your cookware and casseroles were a steal at those prices. I just bought a set of pots and pans – I threw my old one away after I saw the picture of your spotless cookware (inggitera ‘no?). And I was still tempted to buy a Le Creuset after reading it here. However, I found it too heavy for me to lift. Sayang.

Thank you for all the cooking and shopping tips.

  9. Connie says:

Julie, I hope my hubby will play Santa and get me my Le Creuset hehehehe

Soloops, o ‘di ba, nice prices?

Josie, the spotless cookware. My daughter brings a piece or two to school sometimes when they have cooking class. Since I only have three pans (not counting the frying pan and woks), I get so upset when I have to cook in stages instead of all the same time. Worse, she often forgets to bring home the pan after using. The last time, the cooking pan stayed in school for a month.

  10. Janete says:

We use corelle dinnerware and its tested that it doesnt break. I dont even remember breaking a piece. I dropped them (kids too!) several times but it doesnt break. Kya nga I cant justify buying a new one? hehehe Thanks for the info on cooking ware. Now I know which one to buy and I hope may santa claus din bumisita sa bhay ko :)

  11. ajay says:

Looks like you got yourself an early Christmas present Connie. Am sure that your readers will be able to enjoy the writing/cooking of a more inspired Pinoycook because of those new cookware…:)

  12. Josie says:

Connie, I guess you now have all the pots and pans you need. You may not even notice next time your daughter doesn’t bring home a pan. I’ll look around for the same Pyrex wok here. I also like the pattern of your Corningware casseroles. What is it called?

My old cookware was almost 20 years old, so it was really time to buy a new one. With all the recipes and cooking tips I read on your blog, plus my new pots and pans, I may just be ready to cook up a storm this Christmas. hehehe

  13. Connie says:

janete, dress up your hubby in a Santa costume then drag him to Eastwood City hehehehehe

Ajay, ummmm part one only of my Christmas gift hehehehehe HEHEHEHEHE

Josie, the large one is “Blue Elegance”; the smaller one is “Petite Trio”. There are more choices if you opt for the square casseroles. A whole set (six casseroles in graduated sizes) cost only P6,000.00.

  14. Josie says:

Thanks, Connie. Those patterns really look dainty. I have two old sets of Corningware casseroles (suddenly they all look old to me now), which I think will outlive me because they are so durable. However, you’re such an influence that I feel like browsing around the stores for a new set (good excuse, eh?) lol.

  15. dhayL says:

What a nice and sleek looking cookwares you got there ms.conie! I’m sure they’ll a long time, pyrex is a good brand! Enjoy cooking! :)

  16. Connie says:

Josie, enjoy hehehehe And you can always “donate” the old Corningware so you can buy new ones.

dhayL, thanks, been having a ball cooking with them over the weekend. :)

  17. Josie says:

Connie, I checked the Corningware Store at the outlet mall in Niagara Falls, NY, when we went cross-border shopping yesterday. I didn’t find the same patterns you have, though. Mas marami pa yatang choices diyan sa pinuntahan mong outlet. I’ll check our local Walmart store next time I’m out shopping again.

Anyway, I was wondering where I will store/carry the cupcakes I plan to make for the office Christmas party, and found this plastic cupcake carrying case in the same store. A little bit bulky but good for 27 cupcakes. I didn’t even know such a container exists.

Connie, I’ve been back to more home cooking since I started reading your blog. Your shopping tips have also inspired me to update some of my old kitchen stuff at my almost golden age. And that’s a good thing. Thanks.

  18. Connie says:

Josie, I am so glad you’re enjoying cooking again. It’s relaxing, isn’t it? And it brings out our creativity. Cheers!

  19. Nikita says:

Shucks; I just read this. I was at Eastwood last Saturday. :-(

  20. Connie says:

Ows? Kami din nandun. We watched The Nanny Diaries. Nikita, they hold a sale twice a year. Text kita next time. Mga June daw. Splurge tayo hehehe

  21. nicquee says:

    Hi Ms. Connie,

I too love going to this bodega sale. I first knew it from a former officemate. Since then, I and a few other officemates make it to a point to visit the sale whenever there is one.

You’re correct, they hold it twice a year. It’s so nice to be able to buy things like these at a much cheaper price!

I got their rectangular pyrex set last year and their set of knives last june. :)

  22. rima says:

  23. melisa says:

Kaya nga po ayaw na akong pumupunta ng husband ko sa cookware section dahil after nun ma-sa-sad lang ako dahil di ko mabili ang gusto ko. Hopefully makabili ako ng kagaya ng mga nabili nyo. Sobrang kainggit. Sana I could splurge all my 13th month pay on cookwares. hehe…

  24. Mommy S says:

Would you know when is the next sale for this year 2008?

  25. Connie says:

In June, Mommy S. Will post a notice once I know the dates — I’m going back hehehe

  26. wen says:

nakakainggit naman! ang ganda! i’m obsessed with non-stick pans. pero parang wlang nagtatagal, kahit anong ingat ko sa pag gamit. i had an ikea wok from singapore, but it lasted only a month nagtuklap na. then my sister in canada bought me a pyrex skillet yung coated sya, it lasted a year, pero medyo mabigat. pinkamatagal na yung tefal ko at 2yrs.
Ms. connie, gaano na katagal yung tefal mo?
    thanks!

  27. Connie says:

Wen, my Tefal lasts about 2 years too pero after about a year and a half there are visible scratches. Am waiting to see how the Pyrex will fare. :)

  28. Michelle says:

June na!! Any sale dates yet??? :)

  29. Connie says:

July 17 to 20, Ground floor, Athena Building (beside 7-11), Eastwood City.

  30. ogz says:

  31. ester says:

Hi Ms Connie, Just want to know how’s your pyrex non stick, no scratches yet? Am interested to buy one tomorrow. Thank you.

  32. Connie says:

    Great, Ogz. Enjoy mo hehehe

Ester, All 4 pyrex cookware are still great. The wok takes the most beating but it’s still as good as the day I bought it.

  33. Mommy S says:

Sayang di ko nabasa yun post mo regarding sale :( Naka subscribe ako sa newsletter mo.

  34. Connie says:

Mommy S, sayang nga. Dapat siguro, once you get the newsletter, read the entries immediately. :)

  35. raine says:

    Hello Ms. Connie,

I love your site :) helps me a lot, especially ngayon pa lang ako nagaaral mag cook.

Ask ko lang po, what do you suggest na best na frying pan. I just got a nonstick about three weeks ago and I’ve already scratched it. Pwede pa kaya gamitin to or it’s not safe. Sigh. I’m really frustrated cause I did take really good care of it. Na burn lang yung pang cook ko so naging rough na siya, I think that’s how I got the scratches on my pans.

Sigh. I’m thinking of getting a regular pan, I read that stainless steel with copper bottoms are good daw? Or meron kaya Corningware for frying?

    Thanks po sa advice :)

  36. angela says:

  37. nina says:

I love nice cookware. Problem is we don’t have our own house yet and we are currently based abroad. I don’t want to buy a lot of stuff knowing that there’s always a possibility of moving in another country.
