It’s flattering when my girls ask me to cook dishes that they consider my “specialty.” It’s like saying, you know, it’s something I do well and they love it. But, sometimes, they carry things to extreme lengths. Like “ordering” waffles for breakfast and posting the “order” on the bedroom door like one does in a hotel.

That’s Sam’s “order” on her bedroom door. As you can guess from the stain on one corner, it’s been there for a long time — like a standing order. Well, we can have waffles for breakfast on some days but NOT everyday.
And because she feels “deprived” because she lives on what she calls “condo food” five days out of each week (take note that she brings home cooked ulam to the condo every week), she wants a FEAST every time she’s home. She wants lengua every Friday evening when she arrives home for the weekend (no way, lengua is too expensive to be a weekly staple) and she expects a freshly baked cake too. My, my, demanding, isn’t she?
And she always has this drama about eating crap during schooldays. Like… like, just recently, she told us how, for a week, she ate her ulam (brought from home) with corn flakes because there was no rice in the condo. No rice? Yes, well, there’s a rice cooker but she forgot to bring the rice that we bought. And instead of buying cooked rice from the oh, so many eateries in the area, she ate her ulam with corn flakes. And she was acting like she was oh, poor Sam.
Of course, it’s just drama (insert: oh, she’s gonna get at me for using the word drama so, okay, food around her school sucks — happy, Sam?). What she really means is feed me because I miss home cooked meals and eating with the family. I understand.
But not every wish can be granted. Because some are just too darn capricious. There have been times when Sam wants one thing for dinner and Alex wants another. And they squabble over whose “order” gets granted. And I’m like, hey, I’m not running a restaurant here. No kitchen staff, no waiters. I cook one dish per meal and that’s that.
And just what does their father say when demands are flying all over the house? Oh, he gives his own preference. You know, like when Sam wants pasta with white sauce and Alex wants pasta with red sauce, Speedy asks for something else. One time, I gave him a dagger look and he laughed and said it was a joke. Hell, it better be because the Speedy I married eats anything except okra and pancit lomi.
So, if you’re wondering where the heck I get all the materials for the food blog, well… I just try to keep up with what my family wants to eat.

Please adopt me! hahahaha
Can’t blame Sam, she’s nourished by good food. ako din, i’d crave for it.
I can imagine her disgust over dorm food nga eh. pagbigyan mo na, good girl naman eh.
I don’t blame Speedy, Sam and Alex. They are very lucky indeed!!!
hmmm…i could relate to sam. its my father who cooks for the family kasi and now that he’s based in manila everytimes he comes home i always demand from him to cook this and that. yon nga lang may catch since i already have work ako yong bumibili ng mga ingredients c papa lang ang ngluluto.
ms. connie pagbigyan mo na lng kahit paminsan-minsan ang mga girls mo coz you know their growing up fast and soon it will be you who will miss cooking for them.
Mabuti walang “room service” like the hotels.hee hee
I can relate to both of you.During my college years I lived in the nurses dorm for 3 yrs.The food became untolerable. One night I didn’t eat
dinner and around 300am,I woke up dizzy and shaking.I was brought to ER
and end up in the hospital because of hypoglycemia and was given IV’s.
When my 3 children were growing up,like you, I experienced the same situation.Different food preferences gave me migraines.
It’s cyclical,now I missed those times…well,not really.
The message on the post-it was funny.
Joana, you’re about the 100th applicant hahahaha
Marvin, yeah, good girl naman nga. And I’m happy that she’s doing okay in school — naka-develop na ng study habits.
Zara & EmyM, yeah, I think it’s a pain in the neck now but when they fly the coop, so to speak, I’ll miss all these “orders.” But cooking is a real killer in this heat.
Geri, I much prefer the “waffles” post than the one she posted on her closet long ago.
I can relate. My daughter also complains of not being fed well in her dorm. One time I posted family party pictures on facebook and she went like – “you are all having fiesta there, while I am starving here.” LOL.
I agree that Sam just misses your cooking.
Oh, gosh, I hear that all the time! She checks the food blog everyday then complains that she never gets to eat anything she sees there!
Maybe the next time they post “requests” at their door, you can tack a copy of the recipe next to it, and they can wake up early and prepare it themselves. hahaha! =)
re:Speedy not eating okra. i’m finding that between ampalaya and okra, more people would not eat okras. lucky for me my husband eats them, so i can cook it at home, but when i bring some to work, my officemates go eeeewwwww. tsk.
“tack a copy of the recipe next to it”
HAHAHA I’ll do that.
Re okra: It’s not just Speedy. It’s the girls too. They think that the sliminess is yucky. Personally, give me okra anytime–but not ampalaya. hehehe
Same her. I would rather eat okra than ampalaya. Don’t know why.
Thank GOD somebody is willing to cook for me, hello, I got your site from OFWKablog
Haha I used to say that when my father was the one who cooked. Somewhere along the way, I had to learn too .
am still lucky, my father used to cook for me and now have a boyfriend who is a former chef, ohhh myyy! how do I get so luckyyy!
I was just telling my husband to enroll in culinary school now that he’s semi-retired hehehe That oughta work in my favor.
And you are the only one Ms. Connie Veneracion, the sassy lawyer
I tried to be “sweet” lawyer — no takers hahahaha
have you tried the “sexy” lawyer too?
Nyahahaha That might be too overwhelming.
Hi Connie! Sorry, off topic. How do I access your older posts? I’m used to seeing the ‘older posts’ at the bottom of the screen but I can’t find it. I used the calendar but it’s for twitter updates. I don’t know if it’s just not showing on my monitor right now. Sorry! = )
Use the category links or the monthly links of the calendar. I’ll fix the front page soon so I can put back the pagination links at the bottom.
The good thing you have only two children to feed. Imagine, if you have 4 kids and each would like to order different from the others. ayayay!
That’ll be the time to bang my head on the wall. hahaha
Try mo lang Connie – isa pang anak!
Re: lomi – eh di ayaw rin ni Speedy ng pansit malabon?
Kumakain sya pancit malabon. Noodles not that thick for him I think hahaha
Re isa pang anak: mauna ka hehehehe
Mr. Speedy is now the second person that I know who doesn’t eat pancit lomi. The first one is me. Just the sight of it makes want to drink gatorade.
I can’t blame Sam for missing your cooking during weekdays. I always miss my mom’s cooking kahit di sya kasing husay mo magluto.
What’s so wrong with lomi? With Speedy it’s the size of the noodles. Same with you?
For me not just the noodles size. It’s also the sauce that goes with it. Ewan ko ba di ko talaga type lasa. Nakakaumay agad kung titingnan pa lang. I can eat almost any kind of food, except for lomi and raw oyster. Yun lang talaga, swear! Kaya Ms. Connie, hind ka mahihirapan pagisipan na ampunin ako kung sakali.
hehehe it must be the strong MSG in fresh noodles bought in the market. You should try lomi using no-MSG noodles.
Paano kita aampunin eh favorite ko raw oysters?
ah eh, pwede naman akong mag-water therapy paminsan minsan eh.
HAHAHA Kawawang-kawawa naman dating nun.
Can’t blame Mr. Speedy for not eating Lomi coz i absolutely hate it!! Yup, the noodles’ size had to do with it but also the sauce seems slimy to me (sorry! to the lomi fanatics).. I also don’t eat okra or ladyfingers as they call it here..
One suggestion.. You should start taking transients he he he and believe me with all your balikbayan/OFW readers out there, it will be a highly profitable venture..
