Prom night

It’s happening tonight. Sam’s first prom. Crazy as it sounds, Alex is going too although she is only a sophomore. So that meant we had to buy clothes and shoes for both girls.

No, Sam isn’t going in blue jeans. She drove me crazy taking so much time in choosing what to wear. By her standards, everything was either pang-matrona (matronly) or pang-pokpok (slutty). She finally settled on a beige Debenham’s top with mother-of-pearl button trimmings. The price was insane but the mall was about to close and what choice did I really have? Turned out that the item was on sale and, at 60% off, I could only sigh with relief.

Alex chose an Oleg Cassini top in red and a black Criselda Lontok Fernandez bottom.

I could go to the prom too (I can as a faculty member) but Sam isn’t so cool about it. On second thought, I really wouldn’t want to cramp their style. So, Speedy and I talked about donning all-black attires tonight, paint our faces with black make-up, crawl on our bellies towards the clubhouse where the prom will be held and take photos with telephoto lenses. Just a thought, you know.

    dear connie,
well FBI ….kahit sinong mother would be curious what would happen to our daughters come prom night. i can relate to that very much. but my daughters are only 11 and 8. but they are aware na of the prom!! haay mga bata talaga nowadays!!

parents watching the prom?!! OMG! my senior prom was like that and it was not really a happy time for us. some of us were scarred for life. imagine the “ewww” factor when the prom queen and the prom king were called onstage for the first dance of the night while both of their parents were oggling at them. like “eeewww!”. parang tuod tuloy magsayaw yung dalawa kasi they are conscious of their parents. the reason why the parents could watch was because our prom was held in some garden somewhere out there that was accessible to parents, like they could peek behind the bushes and they can call out to their kids from over the fence.

buti na lang my parents were cool. they didn’t attempt even if our house was just a stone’s throw away from venue.

but i pity the others who had their parents there. kawawa nga yung barkada ko kasi yung mom nung date nya was watching on the other side of the fence. eh crush nya pa man din. sus.

  9. Okay, okay, they’ve left and I am here HAHAHAHA Am so not going. LOL I still want to see photos though. I mean, the seniors are all my students, ano? I want to see them naman in their evening best. :)

I was the chauffeur on my son’s first prom, going to the girl’s home and met her parents(white) assuring them that their daughter was in good hands. He got his driver’s licence after that year and on his next prom took our neighbor(filipino) as his partner. He’s now working as a web developer and our neighbor is a computer engineer. They are just friends right now but my wife jokingly calls her parents as “balae”.

  11. LOL and how do your son and the neighbors’ daughter react to the “balae” thing? hehehehe

  12. luthien says:

hahaha. i know you’re sooo dying of curiosity. nuninuninu… nga pala estudyante mo nga pala din sila. nga pala, are your kids going to have you as their teacher when they become seniors? =)

  13. Em Dy says:

I could just imagine you two with walkie talkies, etc. Stake out!

I didn’t enjoy JS Prom at all. We we’re unfortunate to have followed a not very succesful one (there we’re pregnancy incident that occured from the previous prom). Ours was held at screaming 3:00pm til 7:00 pm and parents pick up pa. Hayy!!!

  15. auee says:

What’s a sophomore doing in the prom?
Who are the *dates*? Are they still alive? hehe

I missed your many many posts.

  16. Boo says:

Hi Connie! I remember my Junior Prom…my mom and dad chaperoned!!! I didn’t have a date then, my two best girl friends and I decided to go together, just us. My parents got all dressed up too, and while waiting for me, watched a show in the hotel lobbey (Philippine Plaza) and had a good time. Friends of theirs joined them too. It didn’t feel weird at all, that my mommy and daddy were outside my ballroom waiting for me. What a great support system I had! Kahit pa date-less. =)

  17. iskolar111 says:

Connie, based on my son’s reaction I noticed that he doesn’t want parents to intrude in any of his personal relationships. The girl’s parents and us belong to a rosary praying group and we’ve known each other for years. My son and the girl even enrolled on the same swimming class when they were 5 years old. My wife and I will be very happy if the two will become partners for life but these kids are fiercely independent and they hate it if their parents get involve.

  18. julie says:

Oh, that binoculars with camera would have come handy. We are planning to get one, well, not for the prom yet but for outdoor purposes, hihihi!

How was it, Connie? Did Alex show you the photos?

  19. Nikita says:

Hindi ba pwede talagang makakita ng pics? :-) Did Sam have a date, o di uso yun sa school nila?

  20. Kongkong622 says:

Buti ka nga at least you are thinking of going in camouflage. Eh nanay ko naka-formal wear pa at sinamahan ako complete with 2 alalays who were literally giving her a blow-by-blow account of what was happening. And this was after my Dad refused to let go of me so my date could tie on my corsage.

Iba talaga pag panganay. Anyway, kung ayaw ipa-post ni Sam ang prom pics nya, post mo na lang yun pic nyo ni Speedy in your all-black ensembles :)

  21. I’m back! Busy weekend.

    Luthien, I don’t think so.

    Em, we didn’t go LOL

Jennie, hahaha ang corny naman nun!

    Boo, you didn’t feel weird?

iskolar111, I can understand that. Baka mas magkatuluyan pa if the parents take an indifferent attitude. Speaking as a kid once upon a time, I had this tendency to do the exact opposite of what my parents wanted.

Julie, WALA PA akong nakikitang photos. Grrrrrrrrrrr.

Nikita, patigasan grabe, she didn’t bring anyone. Talagang AYAW. hahahaha And I had such great suggestions. No. 1 is Gio, anak ni Dra. Liza (o kilala mo yan) — o di ba good choice? Eh ayaw ni Sam.

Kongkong, arrraaaaaaaayyyy!!
