Outdoor flash photography

Even natural light outdoors is not always ideal for the effect we want to achieve with the photos we take. The sky may be overcast, the sun might already be too low on the horizon, the subject may be against the light… Using the flash helps. Right, the flash is not just for indoor photography. It can be useful for outdoor photography too.

The photo on the left was taken without firing the flash. In contrast, the flash was fired in the second photo. Aside from the clarity of the letters on the street sign, the color contrast is much attractive too. These photos were taken only a few seconds apart.

I am not so sure though if firing the flash was a good idea in taking the photo of the sunflower below.

I like the shade of the sky better in the first photo (taken without firing the flash). I like the subtle shading on the petals of the sunflower too. The colors in the second photo appear washed out and the sky looks sad.

i aggree, the 2nd shot has washed-out the sunflower.. maybe the flash was just too strong for this close shot.. maybe a fill-flash would do the trick..

you’re right, the first photo of the sunflower looks nicer.
