New, but old

We were leaving Kuala Lumpur to rejoin the ship in Port Klang when we passed this building. And the design struck me immediately. A modern high-rise by any standard and yet it reminded me of traditional mosques. It’s great when an architect can fuse modernity with traditional culture in design. It’s like saying we’re moving forward but we’re confident about who we are. I look at the buildings along Ayala Avenue in Makati and I don’t get that feeling.

I am waiting to have that “feeling”, too, when I look at the structures in the Philippines. In the UAE, they are able to incorporate the traditional designs with modernity (e.g. hospitals, schools, etc.).

    • I think part of the problem is that most of the high-rise buildings here are not designed by local architects. Big projects like that are often done in partnership with foreign architects dubbed as “consultants”.
