Alex insists she NEEDS a car when she goes to college. And, for the past so many months, she had been pestering me and her father to teach her how to drive. She’s only 15 and she doesn’t even qualify for a student license.
Anyway, a few nights ago, we were having dinner when the doorbell rang. Delivery from Volvo Philippines. A “thank you” card (for my support for the Voice of Leadership project) and a be-ribboned box. I read the card, laid card and unopened box on the coffee table and went back to finish my dinner. I jokingly said there must be a car key inside the box and Alex started to get excited. AS IF. There was no raffle during the Voice of Leadership Gala Night so I couldn’t have won a brand new Volvo. But the expression on Alex’s face, aahh… priceless!
As soon as she was finished eating, Alex got hold of the box and volunteered, “Mommy, I’ll open it for you.” And she did. Hurriedly. Excitedly.
I took a peek and said, “Oh, glow-in-the-dark refrigerator magnets!”
Then, I took one in my hand and…
It started to melt. Chocolates!

Well, they looked like refrigerator magnets more than car keys, that’s for sure. And I don’t think I need to describe the expression on Alex’s face at that point.
But me? Oh, I love chocolates!
And, come to think of it: Even if I won a brand new Volvo in some raffle or contest, Alex can’t really think she’d have it for her first car. No way! She can practice driving in the old Toyota Corolla.

YUMM! Those look pretty too.
lol! I can imagine the look. My girls both have their driving permits now and get that wishful look when a new car is mentioned too
I’m with you though, those chocolates look yummy! and I bet they won’t raise your car insurance rate.
Kids’ eyes literally twinkle when a new car is mentioned. Funny that I don’t remember reacting that way when I was a teenager. My only concern was having a car of my own and never mind if it was the oldest and most battered in the garage so long as it was FAST. LOL!
Aaww poor Alex, I could imagine her disappointment when she opened the box
It’s like me being all excited with my hubby’s “surprise” only to find a plastic jewelry case. I was mentally picturing lingerie.
I do agree with you, they do look like refrigerator magnets. But did they taste as good as they look?
If I get a free Volvo I’d probably sell the car unless it comes with free lifetime service and maintenance. I maybe able to get a good second hand car if I needed to pay for the regular km checks.
Not Ghirardelli quality but not bad.
Wouldn’t it be wonderful if it’s really Volvo keys!!
When my daughter was 19,she won a Toyota Echo sponsored by
Seventeen magazine which she joined on-line. I’m skeptic about
these contest but after she got the car I’m encouraging everyone
to try their luck and join any contest as long as they don’t
ask for a fee or money.
That chocolate looks yummy.
Naku lagot ka tumangap ka ng give away hahahaha. Just kidding.
LOL Uy napulot ko sa Akiset filter yung comment mo.
Hahaha! Poor Alex. It wouldnt have made much difference even if you had won the Volvo.
Hahaha. Parang too good to be true to win a Volvo. But I had an officemate who won a BMW in the Duty Free raffle a few years back:)
Wow, if it was tax free, hooray! Ako kaya, kelan kaya ako mananalo sa raffle?
That was a unique way of saying thank you from Volvo. I can imagine Alex’s excitement. She’ll get what she wants at the right time. =)
I wonder when’s the right time for ME to get what I want — a Porsche! LOL
The Porsche will look good on you. I just saw a picture of 2009 911 Coupe on Craigslist for $93,500. I’m sure you can still negotiate on the price.
$93,500? Ngek. Whenever I talk about fast cars, Speedy says they’re useless in Metro Manila where the traffic rarely allows you to use the 4th gear.
Had a old Volvo as my first car cost around £1000
Am looking to buy a pre-owned Volvo w/ good working AC for around P150,000. I might consider other cars too.
