Hi Connie,

Read your Manila Standard article about The Birds of Prey and Batjay. I think the poet you were referring to (with the dots and comma) was Abadilla -- although I remember the poem that we took up was in Filipino so don't know if you were referring to the same poem or poet.

Anyway, interesting article. As for the debates -- well, each is entitled to his or her own opinion. I guess it is literature if something in the piece connects with the reader. Iba iba na siyempre yan.

Very strange comment from @kotsengkuba - I don't think you will find any broadband ISP in the Philippines who can give you a "10mbps" or "100mbps" connection. You may have to move to Korea for that :)

Connie, the "3G phone as a modem" backup trick is tried and true (just make sure you use a Smart prepaid sim as Globe 3G is rather a dicey proposition nowadays if you want a steady connection). If your iPhone can't be used as a modem, you might want to pick up a second hand LG or Nokia with 3G.

As to the usual statement that "a 3G phone is just as good as the Bro plug-it" canard - well that would only be true if the phone is an HSDPA device like the Bro USB modem. If you lug the modem around and connect in an area with a HSDPA signal - then you'd get around 1.5 mps.
Probably not too common place now, but Smart's upgrading a lot of their base stations, so an HSDPA signal may be coming around your area sooner than you think.

The cheapest HSDPA phone I can think of is the Nokia 6120c - around 10 grand. The ZTE MF 622 modem used as the Smart Bro Plug It modem is still cheaper at P4,500 and has a maximum throughput of 7.2 mbps (of course you won't get that speed in this country, but it's nice to know the horsepower is under the hood, like driving a Ferrari in Quiapo.)
