If one of them had chosen a culinary school

There was a time when Speedy and I thought that at least one of our daughters would go to culinary school. When Sam and Alex were around 11 and 12, their interests centered on kitchen experiments and we thought that would be it. Then, their world got bigger and Sam decided she was going to be a photographer while Alex vacillated for a while between multimedia arts and fine arts but finally decided on a career in film.

But before Sam made the final decision, when they were having their career week during her senior year in high school, she came home one day with a brochure from Enderun Colleges, distributed by representatives who went to their school and talked about Enderun. I had never heard of Enderun before, Sam said it was for people interested in hotel and restaurant management and culinary arts. I had to ask if she had changed her mind about photography, she said no, but even if she had, she said Enderun was too expensive. Right. Something like P300K per year and that excluded uniforms and supplies. I listened, saw the figures dancing inside my head and I felt faint.

Alex is a senior high school student now, they had their career week recently and part of the activities was a visit to Enderun Colleges. She took photos.

I’m impressed with the physical facilities but I have no idea about the quality of education. There are expensive schools were the tuition rates are justified by the quality of both the facilities and the teaching; there are expensive schools that are, well, just expensive. If you’re into hotel and restaurant management or culinary arts, or if you have children who are geared towards either, you can check out the Enderun website and gather more details from there. But just to share with you what Alex shared with me, click on the thumbnails below to view the photos in the gallery.

Hi Ms. Connie, I already heard of Enderun when we were living in Fort Bonifacio and like you, I also felt faint when I saw in their website how much the tuition fee costs but when I saw Alex’s pictures, I felt that the tuition fee is justified. I think that their internship is also in well-known resorts in the world hence, the high tuition. If only we had that much cash. hehe. Well, if my daughter suddenly tells me that she would like to take up culinary arts, then I think that there are less expensive schools to take the course, minsan naman kasi kapag may talent talaga ang bata, di ba kahit saan naman nag-aral? sour-graping. hehe.

    • If the quality of education justifies the price, I’d take out a mortgage if one of the girls were interested in going there. But then neither is interested hehehehe

Hmm…very feasible plan Ms. Connie. Thanks for that tip.

300K per year excluding supplies and uniform??!!!! With 2 out of my 3 kids still in preschool, my youngest is only 2 years old, I wonder how much the cost of education will be pag nasa college na ang mga anak ko. Baka 2 na kaming mag-asawa ang magbenta ng katawan sa Makati Ave.!!! :D

      • Multiply by 10 per cent per year, compounded, you’ll get the amount. Well, unless the government removes ceilings and allow schools to keep raising tuition. Kaloka.

Yeah, the cost of education nowadays… kakatakot!
Alex pala is in her senior high na katulad ng eldest son ko. It’s good to know that she knows what she wants. Eto akin mukhang marami gusto gawin sa buhay — mas nakakatakot. I guess that’s what I miss for not having a daughter, para kasing mabilis mag-mature ang girls kaysa sa boys. Oh, not that my son is not matured, kaya lang it seems he’s into so many things that I’m getting confused and having doubts na gusto nya talaga mag-doctor.:(

    • Naku, that’s one thing — none of my daughters even considered taking up medicine kasi madidirihin sila. If one or both of them showed any interest, I don’t think we’d have moved houses. Shucks. Talk about an expensive course.

Hi, Connie.. my daughter goes to Enderun Colleges. She’s now in third year, she’s majoring in Hotel Administration (HA), but plans to shift next sem to include Culinary Arts (CA). So she’ll be double majoring on HA and CA.

Mataas talaga ang tuition fees, but my daughter applied for scholarship – and that’s less P50k per sem. I think now, new students are given more options for financial assistance.

What can I say about the school? Their kitchen is world class! hahaha. Seriously, I believe the quality of education at Enderun, plus the facilities, compensate well for the fees.

    • Wow, first hand info! Thanks. All the while I thought your daughter was in CCA, Enderun pala! And I agree about the kitchen. It was the kitchen photos that really impressed me.

And Sam also mentioned that it was reasonably easy to get a scholarship and financial assistance. Galing. Sayang wala akong anak na gusto may culinary hahahaha

An expensive education is considered an investment for a highly motivated student.

The school has its own placement office which has tie-ups with leading companies in the industry from internship to actual employment.

So there is already the clear advantage once the student undergoes career mapping and counseling while studying. There is something to look forward at the end of studies.

      • What crossed my mind was — what if I ENROLLED in culinary arts? hehehe Not for any intention to be employed as a chef but just to learn. Of course, that would be AFTER both girls are done with college. hehehehe

      • d0d0ng says:

Yep! Everything we do is work in progress. There is a nice ring to it on what we can do later. Good luck, Sass!

Teka, somebody duplicate my posts with link to kitchen items for sale. Whoa!

      • I deleted it. :)

I like the school buildings. Very European. The reason why it’s probably expensive is because it has tie-ups with some Swiss HRM institutions? That, by itself, would make the school a cut above the rest.

    • You know, I checked Google for that because Alex has a classmate who moved to Switzerland and who says she will be studying in Enderun there. But I couldn’t find any Anderun in Switzerland. Google results only point to an Enderun school, Turkish, and the etymology of the name.

great shots! ka impress nga naman ang kitchen.. sarap mangarap.. hehe.. ako rin, gusto ko rin mag aral, pero not to work as a chef.. di ko yata kaya pressure nun.. hehe.
