Honey – lemon drink

Live interaction with readers is one thing that a column writer does not enjoy. Lucky me, I was a blogger before I was a newspaper columnist so I know the value of real feedbacks–minus, of course, the kind of muck that seems to be the staple of political blogs. I do get my share in The Sassy Lawyer’s Journal.

The interaction in this blog, in particular, has been a wonderful source of insights, information, cooking tips and even health advice. In the comment thread of my honey-lemon-ginger chicken recipe, reader Malou shares her favorite hot drink made, quite simply, with fresh lemon juice, honey and hot water.

honey-lemon drink

After the school bus picked up the kids this morning, instead of going for my second cup of coffee, as is my habit, I tried Malou’s concoction and, I must say, I enjoyed it tremendously. It was very good.

Malou recommends a proportion of 1 tsp. honey and the juice of a quarter of a lemon in a cup of freshly-boiled water. I like my morning drink a little strong so I increased the amount to 2 tbsps. of honey and the juice of half a lemon in a cup of hot water. It went so well with my ham-and-lettuce sandwich. :)

Thank you, Malou. I just developed a new addiction. :)

Hi Connie! That’s what doctors perscribe here in Germany for sore throat, COUGH and the sniffles as opposed to taking medicines — works well for me!

Hi Phynkee, I did think it is so similar to salabat which I wish my kids would learn to like because it’s good for cough and sore throat. I really do not keep medicine in the house and I try to avoid them like the plague. Maybe, minus the strong aroma and taste of ginger, my kids will enjoy this honey-lemon drink.

Hi Denise, wow so a first world country like Germany goes back to the basics–natural cure. I hope that becomes a worldwide trend.

Hi Connie, I kinda freaked out the first time I went to the doctor cause they wouldn’t perscribe me meds even if I was so sick. Like sniffles and cough – Dissolve salt in a big bowl of hot water and inhale the fumes. For bladder infections and reproductive health matters — eat a lot of natural joghurt. Toothaches – chew on cloves and for any mouth infection/ throat infection — gargle with a strong infusion of camomile tea. They work so far. Yeah, I at least hope that the doctors in Manila stop giving antibiotics for every single sickness!

Denise, you know, Filipino doctors should take that approach considering that over 90% of the population cannot afford drugs.

Gena, I’m adopting it for may cough-cold cure too. Much much better than any foul tasting cough syrup!

When I was a new monther, I read an old medical book (1950 edition) that belonged to my mom to look up for home remedy for children’s cough. And there it was : lemon and honey drink. Still use this cold remedy till now.
