Health and the family

In half the trials, there was a 6 percent increased risk of death from cancers of the esophagus, stomach, pancreas, liver, colon and rectum in persons who took supplements, compared to those who took a placebo, the researchers found.

But certain combinations of supplements seemed to be more dangerous, the researchers said.

A 30 percent higher risk was found for combination supplements containing beta carotene and vitamin A, and a 10 percent risk for supplements combining beta carotene and vitamin E. [Id.]

Give me a healthy environment, a healthy lifestyle and enough intellectual stimulation and I’ll be fine. When the doctor says “urban sprawl makes you sick”, I can’t agree more. Except for the occasional colds and coughs, my family has not suffered from any illness since we moved to the suburbs. Despite having stayed away from milk formulas and multi-vitamin supplements, both my kids are in the honor roll. So, before believing the glossy posters and magazine ads, before saying “yes” to those tantalizing TV commercials, take a long and hard look at the products being dangled before you. Are they really for you and your family’s benefit?
