FAQ about the WordPress blog template

Okay, time to answer a few e-mails. Most of them, I just reply to; others, I prefer to answer here to avoid repetitious queries and because, maybe, the Q&A will benefit others.

1. You design your blog?

Noooooo… There is an attribution link on the right sidebar. It says Whitespace theme by Brian Gardner. He’s the same guy who designed Revolution News which I’m using in Pinoy Cook.

I know that the theme’s name is Whitespace and this blog is all green. I don’t choose a blog theme for its colors — I choose it for the layout and customisability. Then, I rip it apart and put it back together to give it the “me” look.

2. Why do you keep changing the way the blog looks?

Okay, I get that question many times and, often, with complaints about how they liked the previous design etcetera. Like when I shifted to a magazine style theme for Pinoy Cook, reactions were varied. It was a radical change, yes, and some said they liked it while others kept complaining that they couldn’t find anything. I mean, duh, all the links were still there. All the content was still there. What couldn’t they find? Amazing, really.

What about this blog? Truth is, the layout has not been changed in quite a while. A month or so, and that’s really way too long for me. Only the colors, backgrounds and headers change. The way things are organized, they have stayed the same.

(For posterity’s sake, because this entry will eventually go deep into the archive and if someone reads this AFTER the design changes once more, he’s not going to be able to appreciate this entire entry. So, for posterity’s sake, below is a screenshot of the current design.)

The Mommy Journals

Why change at all? It has something to do with three things: (a) that never-ending quest for a balance between functionality and aesthetics; (b) because I’m frustrated at not being able to re-design the interior of our house so I pour out my frustration by re-designing my blogs instead and (c) because I like to play with graphics/photo editing software.

3. Photo editing software? You mean Adobe Photoshop, right?

No, I don’t. I USED TO BE a Photoshop addict. I shifted to GIMP about six months ago and never looked back. GIMP is free and it does what I need it to do. Adobe Photoshop has far too many functions that are lost on me anyway so why use up the system’s resources? I don’t need to contour images of teacups, chopsticks, cookware and dinnerware. I don’t need to airbrush the cat‘s body to make it look sexy — you know, shades of that now infamous Angelica Panganiban calendar photos. I’m perfectly happy with GIMP. Well, unless I get a new Mac and Adobe CS3 is installed as part of the package.

4. So, you’re going to change it again..??

Of course. Not sure about the “when” though because I’m very pleased with the current design. So, the blog may look like this for quite a while. Pinoy Cook’s design has not been changed in almost two months — maybe this blog’s design won’t change until the New Year. Maybe. Maybe not.

5. I really like the previous design

Well, I’m sorry to hear that. But I like this one better and it’s my blog.

6. Why isn’t there a search box?

Because I forgot to put one in after I got rid of the large footer from the original Whitespace theme. No worries, it’ll pop up soon.

7. This design doesn’t look too good in Internet Explorer…

Why are you still using Internet Explorer in the first place? Don’t you know that IE sucks? Get Firefox. Or Opera. Both are lots better. And free.

Still using IE… *shakes head*

I’ll try to try the GIMP and see what it does.

About the Firefox, I as well was “afraid” at first to shift to Firefox since I was comfortable then with IE. Like I would be “afraid” to shift from Photoshop to GIMP. I first used Firefox because of its single-window-multiple-tabs function that enables one-alt-tab-and-the-rest-of-the-cyberspace-is-hidden. Then came a few plugins and more plugins and the rest is history.

I tried IE7 because they also have the tab function but it’s so full of bugs up to now so I’ll probably go deeper with FF2 instead. I saw once that there’s a FF3 beta already.

  2. GIMP is different from Photoshop in many ways. But I love it’s straightforward approach. Not too artsy nor too techy.

Adobe confuses me!!! Thanks for the GIMP lead. I’ll check it out!
