DaRoose’s July 18 prediction

There are very few people I know who still haven’t heard of Mr. Juseleeno Nobulega DaRoose. An e-mail containing his predictions has been circulating on the Internet for weeks. Even non-Internet addicts know his name and his prediction for July 18 — that an 8.1 earthquake will hit the Philippines and thousands will die.

For someone who doesn’t even believe in the Nostradamus crap, my first instinct was to search Google for information about Mr. Juseleeno Nobulega DaRoose. It wasn’t surprising that except for the content of the e-mail with the July 18 doomsday prediction, nothing much turned up. The man purportedly predicted the death of Diana, Princess of Wales, the 9/11 attack on the World Trade Center and the 2004 earthquake in Indonesia that triggered the most horrendous tsunami in modern history. Yet, Google didn’t know him except in relation to the now (in)famous e-mail about the July 18 earthquake that warned people to stay home.

More digging led to information that the man’s name is Jucelino Nóbrega da Luz and Juseleeno Nobulega DaRoose is the Asian version of his name (probably a case of having been lost in translation). The English version of Google did not know much about him nor his predictions because his Web site is written in his native Brazilian tongue.

Okay, perhaps, I am just a skeptic. But hundreds–thousands–of men and women have made fortunes by claiming they could see into the future, predict the rise and fall of fortunes, foretell disasters and the apocalypse, and even talk directly with what they represent as God. Believers have poured out their hearts, their time and their money to these charlatans but unless they became part of the false prophets’ inner circles, then, they remain just as poor and ignorant.

What I am not skeptical about is that sometime in the future, the world, as we know it, will indeed end. It’s nature. Nothing lasts forever, not even planets and stars. But whether the end of the world will happen in one day, one week, one year or one millennium is anyone’s guess.

And when we say “end of the world,” it doesn’t necessarily mean that the planet will disappear by breaking in half or in a million smithereens. It may mean the end of life on earth and that is nothing to be mystified about. It has happened before, just read your kids’ science books and pay attention to the parts about the Ice Age and the dinosaurs. But with the death of each epoch with all its living organisms, new life has sprouted and thrived. It’s the cycle of life. Life and death, then life once more — new life that may not even remotely resemble the life forms that became extinct.

These are things we read about in grade school. These are things that awed us, made our eyes wide with wonder, prompted us to raise our hands and probe our teachers to satisfy our curious minds. I don’t understand why when children become adults, they forget what they have learned and become susceptible to prophetic visions and predictions and act as though these things deserve to be forwarded, wasting precious bandwidth and time. It’s such an irony but most people seem to grow backwards.

As for Jucelino Nóbrega da Luz a.k.a. Juseleeno Nobulega DaRoose, well, there are Web page translators and it wasn’t all that hard deciphering the content of his Web site. His “prophecies” have turned him into a local TV and radio personality and a bestselling author.

Of course, the fact that he has become some sort of celebrity doesn’t necessarily make him a fake but if predictions of typhoons in June in Philippines are to be considered proof of powers of divination or something, well, June is typhoon season in the Philippines so what’s the big deal? He also “predicted” the economic boom in China to begin in 2008 but the whole world knows about the Beijing Olympics so is that such a puzzle?

He says he sent a letter of warning to Diana, Princess of Wales, before she died but who else is there, except for Mr. Da Luz/DaRoose, to confirm that such a letter ever existed? A similar letter is said to have been sent to the US president warning of 9/11 but no one’s talking about that letter except Mr. Da Luz/DaRoose whose statements are now being repeated all over the Internet.

He says he sent a letter of warning to the ambassadors of India, Thailand, Indonesia and the Philippines about the 2004 tsunami but the existence of such letters remain unconfirmed. If such warnings have indeed been sent, wouldn’t the governments of these countries be fawning over him by now and hired him as some sort of consultant or adviser?

I wonder how many Filipinos will indeed skip work on July 18, refuse to go up tall buildings and make their children miss school.

I call bull! Sadly a lot of us are still gullible. Aside from those missing school/work, I wonder how many will go into panic buying mode. I forgot where I read it now, but his “letters” were debunked as they found proof of date tampering with regards to the postal stamps.

  2. Willingly gullible, I think.

On a side note, you can just imagine how profitable the prophet business is. Profit… prophet LOL

when this story came out here in UAE, i know a lot of our kababayans who went in panic and started calling home. i never did. only last thursday, my sister texted me that they received a caution (thru text) from one of our cousin, who’s also here in UAE about the coming July 18 earthquake. So much concern for our family, huh?! she must have taken the news so seriously and took all the effort of spreading the news within the family. As for my parents and siblings, they know better than to believe this crap.

  4. Profitable for mobile service providers too! the prophet business really spreads the joy.

I’ve read somewhere that he’s been exposed as a fraud, forging the post office stamps to show that he mailed a letter BEFORE an event, when in fact he did so after. I’m looking for the link now. If you think about it, sometimes the simplest explanation is the correct one.

  6. Kotsengkuba says:

Gullible people! Later you’ll receive an email selling viagra or penis enlargement pills because Jucelino Nóbrega da Luz apparently just started those emails so later he could sell those gullible peoples’ email addresses to online pharmacies.

I’m currently doing an experiment to find out who among these website runners are selling my email to spammers. hahaha ;-)

He must be a mathematician. He knew that prophet = profit.

  8. ormocanon says:

Haaaay naku, Just because this guy da Roose predicted a big earthquake coming our way on July 18 ay basta na lang tayo maniniwala.

As for me, dapat we should seek a second opinion, …dapat itanong muna natin kay Madame Auring kung meron ba talaga, o wala. :D

  9. ben says:

I don’t live in a two-story house, so if the roof or the second level falls on my head, it’s not going to hurt so much.. hey I can even take shelter under my bed! And I predict outdoor ihawans will be even more popular after this earth-shaking event. :-)

  10. Lee says:

There will be an earthquake on July 18. Please pass to ten friends for good luck

  11. val says:

i’m all for saving the lives of people and all, but falling for a forwarded email is plain idiocy. or plain katamaran to stay at home. [if it's going to be an 8.1 quake, you're not going to be safe anywhere.] so what time do people need to start waiting, 12:01am? hanggang kinabukasan? [walaaang tulugaaan!] then come saturday, back to normal na? phft.

what’s irritating about it is that the ‘information’ is being passed around as if it was a moral obligation to ‘warn’ people about the said quake. never mind if the whole idea is just illogical and unfounded as long as you forward the email to whoever and fulfill your social responsibility.

It goes to show that even how educated and well travelled you are, there is still tendencies to believed on superstition, illogical ideas and things science can’t yet explained. I received my copy from 3 professional people I considered intelligent.

I do this myself. It makes one aware of which sites practice that shady art of selling emails to spammers.

Handy Tip: I use the plus (+) trick using my gmail account. So whenever I subscribe to something I just append + then a descriptive text of what I’m subscribing to and it should be delivered to my original gmail. So if my email is juan.dela.cruz@gmail.com and say I subscribe to nba.com, I use the email address juan.dela.cruz+nba@gmail.com and if spam turns out addressed to said email, I’ll know the culprit. :)

  14. I am adding this comment to make the comment count 14. Who wants a 13, right? LOLOL

Okay, kidding. What I wanted to say was that’s a nice tip about e-mail spam. Darn, I wish I had the time to keep track of all that.

I’m going on home office on Friday, July 18, 2008, not because of the predictions but because of the high prices of gas!!! (I work in the 40F of a bldg in Ortigas in front of the Marikina fault line ;-) ) he! he!

  19. Hello Connie ,

I can actually understand Portuguese and I went to his Brasilian website and did not find any entry on his predictions under Julho 2008 (July 2008) about the Philippines, the closest neighbor to have been mentioned was Japan. In fact, Filipinas appeared under Junho 2008 (June 2008) which says :

    Grandes enchentes na China provocadas por um furacão e já são milhares de mortes e começa atingir Bangladesh e Filipinas;

Or translated : Great floods caused by hurricanes with thousands of death starts to hit Bangladesh and The Philippines.

But here’s the thing, do we ever get get hurricanes in the Pacific? More so, aren’t floods always a problem every year. Oh come on. Hahaha, be scared of not being able to live life to the extent everyday and not following our dreams. I am more worried about that than any natural catastrophe. Haha.

  20. Ex-art student, re “aren’t floods always a problem every year”

Exactly. It’s like exaggerating natural occurrences, making them sound more dramatic and catastrophic and, voila! Doomsday predictions. Funny that people are buying his crap.

If you are ready, then whats d problem… Only God knows what will really happen on that day… Basta keep on praying and ask forgiveness for your sins… and lastly reform yourself so that you will be able to help this sinking run by corrupt leaders… I hope they can read this one!!!!!!!

  23. Which lord is that, Mike?

Sins, Benz? Whose definition of “sin” is the valid one?

And I was like huh? how can he/she predict that? and so i search over the net and found this entry and read the GMA news thingy. And I just laughed at it. I don’t understand spanish or any other language aside from English (i’m not even good at it but i can understand)Neways, Japan always have earthquake right? Philippines after summer experience lotsa typhoons and landslide any catastrophy. DUH! Even summer there’s always been floods in Phil. Well see what’s gonna happen on Friday…There’s only one thing’s for sure… my husband,my kids and me are going out shopping! I’m willing to pay million to this Juscilino if he can predict what’s gonna happen to me this year! LMAO! plain crap. Is there anything he can do for a living aside from making ppl panic? Come on! he can do better than that. Naghihirap na nga ang pinas mas lalo pa nyang pinapahirapan…dami nang iniisip ang mga tao, tumataas na bilihin at gas tapos ito pa? sheesh! Can someone kill him please? :D

  30. Androme-MU Phils-Bhar says:

Don’t just judge him. Nothing to lose if we believe. As the saying goes, ‘Prevention is better than cure.’ We should always be prepared with or without predictions!!!!! That’s the weakness of us, Filipinos, we are still preparing when the tragedy comes. Haaaayyyzzzz!!!!! Will you ever learn???

  31. Androme-MU Phils-Bhar says:

We’re not talking about religion here kookie. It’s just a warn or mind-wakening that we, Filipinos, should always be prepared. Actually, I am not one-sided, but I think, the predictions of Mr. Juseleeno Nobulega DaRoose is a warning! ^,.,.,^

  32. Androme-MU Phils-Bhar says:

    WTF! Predictions Predictions Predictions
I think it’s not just a prediction, it’s a sign that we must start preparing ourselves in any circumstances that may come. Whether it is a tragedy or not. We’ll you are all right in your own opinion, but it is not bad to be prepared, isn’t it?

  33. “Nothing to lose if we believe”
