A reader posted a comment on my other blog about how to make rounded corners if the background of the web page is black. I was amused thinking I was being reminded, indirectly, that this blog does have a category called GIMP tutorials and I haven’t posted any tutorial in a long time.
Okay, so the easiest way to do this is to use visual illustrations. On the left is a screenshot of the GIMP toolbox. I have highlighted a portion (the raised circle) where I will start the tutorial. The two boxes on the raised circle control the foreground and background colors — not just for making rounded corners but for a lot of things. When you create rounded corners, the color of corners that protrude from the rounded edges will be the same as the color specified in the lower of those two boxes. Let’s say the background color of your web page is black. What do you do? You double click the lower box to open the color palette.

In HTML Notation, type the code for the color of your web page. Black is 000000; red is CC0000; white is FFFFFF; yellow is FFFFCC; and so on and so forth.
Then, you open the photo that you want to edit. Crop, resize, sharpen and enhance first before creating the rounded corners. Then, click Script Fu in the main menu, scroll down to Decor then choose and click Rounded Corners. A box like the one below will appear.

Make sure that Add Background is checked. Click Ok and, presto!, your photo will have rounded corners AND the background that you specified.

I was able to do it thanks to your step by step instructions. Now I’m excited to learn the superimposing of text. Yehey!
