Christmas decorating is a family affair

So there was this wreath, a wreath I was very happy with because it was unique — no holly, no acorns, no berries, no poinsettias. And I was mighty proud to put it up on the front door. We did that yesterday afternoon.

Then Sam woke up from her nap, saw the wreath and declared it was fit for a funeral. Pang-patay were her exact words. Shit, that hurt. Bad. But then I taught her never to hold back on her opinions, and maybe I forgot to teach her how to state her opinions more diplomatically, so I said nothing.

The good news was that she was willing to transform it. And so she did. Last night, after dinner, she brought out rolls of ribbons and a glue gun. Some two hours later, the plain lily wreath became this.

I have to concede that the wreath looks better with the ribbons. Festive but still subdued enough so that it exudes a quiet elegance rather than tacky glitter. You know, still following the principle that you don’t have to shout to be noticed.

But before we put the wreath back on the front door, Speedy and I had a blast playing paparazzi.

That’s one thing about Christmas decorating. It’s always a family affair.

And that is the story of this year’s Christmas wreath.

Hi! I’ve been a “silent” follower of your blog for sometime now and I enjoy reading your posts. Re: white wreath – medyo mukha nga yatang pang-patay, hehe, sorry ha but that was also the first thing that came to my mind when I saw it, siguro because of the type of flowers used. Sam’s festive ribbons definitely made the wreath more “Christmassy”.

  8. Thank you, Alren. Holiday greetings to you and yours too.

Lori, talaga? Naku, ha, hindi pala nag-iisa si Sam. LOL

Ms. Connie, what is it about daughters, they can be so damn honest. hehe. Our eldest keeps on criticizing my Christmas decors, kasi I chose natural colors. Even the few lights that I put up in the nativity scene, the lights are of one subdued color. Ang anak ko, she’s adamant, she insists on lights of all colors. Plus a huge parol outside and Santa, and reindeers, sheesh. She wants more color (she says the same thing about my wardrobe, hmp).I gave in only by placing a red ribbon around the garland. Para manahimik na.

haha i think i need to learn how to state my opinions more diplomatically, too.

sam’s wreathe looks so pretty. very elegant nga. parang gusto kong lagyan ng kandila sa gitna ;)

  11. Lemon, now that you mention wardrobe — HAHAHA my daughters have a LOT to say about my wardrobe too. And I tell them, aba, kanya-kanyang style lang yan.

Eden, I think diplomacy is something one learns as one grows older. As harsh as the opinions of the young may be, the honesty is quite refreshing. :)

it has been raining and wind blowing…. wala na ang mga inflatable , parang flat tyres lol..

  13. Crisma says:

I agree that Sam’s touch made all the difference… and it was good that she was honest in expressing what she saw… had she been pretentious about it and said ” yah, it looks good…” then there wouldn’t be any Christmas flavor to it… Thank goodness for honest daughters…

    Lovely house!

  14. Crisma says:

And, if I may add, Connie… may I suggest (I am also quite interested sa Christmas decorating and even had a period earlier when I engaged in it as a business)… na pwede ring mag-add ng some fresh looking touches like parang green grapes/berries…place those randomly…and I assure you, they would still look simple, yet elegant…

  15. Problema nga namin we don’t know anymore where to get decor. In bookstores the prices are terrible. Divisoria is too crowded. Maybe another trip to Dapitan. Maybe.

And we still don’t have a Christmas tree hahaha

  16. lemon says:

re:crazy prices of xmas decors. Naku, Ms. Connie, these stores are so infuriating. I miss my trip to dapitan last year. Ang dami dami mabibili dun, very classy pa, unlike those in SM which are so artificial-looking.

  17. Miguk says:

You convinced me — I’m going to Dapitan tomorrow! Then to the Nutcracker at CCP. Very Christmasy weekend.

  18. trosp says:

Ha ha ha we’re still lucky we can have all the free-will on how we would be reminded of the Christmas season.

In US, I heard that it is not allowed to call Christmas Season as it is but a holiday season. One can’t even put up a Santa Claus getup in malls. And in its extremity, those secular fringe would not want to put into display anything with red or blue color in it during xmas season.

Take this one as an example – “Taunton second-grader suspended over drawing of Jesus ”
