Spray vodka on your bathroom and kitchen tiles to make them spotless

Once upon a time, I was watching Oprah! and her guest was Kirstie Alley. My “acquaintance” with Kirstie Alley is a long one having first seen her in the 1980s mini-series North and South, and its sequel North and South II. I watched the shows with my father who fancied himself a connoisseur of beautiful ... (more)

Replacing the pressure cooker’s rubber sealing ring

pressure-cooker-rubber-sealing-ring

With the never ending fuel price hikes and the concomitant rise in the price of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG), we’ve been trying to find ways to cut down on our consumption. While I still love to bake, when there’s just Speedy and myself at home and baking a whole bunch of cupcakes is simply too ... (more)

Food bag clips

bag-sealer

Whenever we’d open a bag of food stuff and we couldn’t use or eat all of the contents, we’d keep the excess fresh by transferring it into either a resealable bag or a plastic container with a tight lid. Good quality resealable bags are not inexpensive and, although they are washable and reusable, it is ... (more)

A cook’s working kitchen

casaveneracion-kitchen5

One of my favorite past times is browsing through house designs. I frequent sites like this, this, this and this and I imagine what it would be like to live in one of those fabulous homes featured in them. ALL THAT SPACE. ALL THOSE GORGEOUS FURNITURE. NO MESS. Indoor plants, flower vases and coffee table center pieces

fresh-flowers

If you’re a long time reader, you’d probably know my abhorrence toward artificial flowers. Artistically arranged dried leaves, twigs and buds are okay with me but not plastic flowers. With that kind of attitude, one would think that I cut flowers from the garden everyday and arrange them in water filled vases, Martha Stewart style. ... (more)

We spend a lot of effort in maintaining proper sanitation in the kitchen. We keep our hands clean, we keep our food clean, we observe cleanliness in food preparation. What about the utensils? Of course, we wash them well and keep them away from dust and dirt until the next use. We clean the stove ... (more)

What an inverter in a refrigerator can mean in terms of power consumption

new-refrigerator

The first time I heard of an inverter, it was in relation with air-conditioners. We were planning on converting my study into a home theater, we were discussing air-conditioning and a cousin mentioned inverters. I can’t explain it in very technical terms; I only know that an inverter-equipped air-con unit can mean a lot of ... (more)

From the Noritake warehouse

Over at the Food Talk Community, member Lois posted this message: “If you’re a fan of Noritake, there’s a warehouse-type sale until June 13. Saw the sign near the MRT North Avenue station. I think they have a shop there.” I’m not sure if there is a shop in the North Avenue area but I ... (more)

Dried herbs and spices go into airtight containers

herb-jarEarlier this week, I found these lovely jars at the supermarket. Just the right size for the content of packets of dried herbs and spices. I found seven of them on the shelf, I bought them all, and I would have bought more had the supermarket not run out of stocks.

Asset or liability?

The space that I converted to my study/office was originally designed as a family room. There used to be built-in TV and DVD cabinets but I had them replaced with desks and bookshelves. The space opens to the living room below. There is a railing on one end where we can see directly into the ... (more)
