Although the fierce heat of the summer still rages, I have managed to sufficiently psych myself out of my lethargy. I’ve started cooking decent meals again a couple of days ago. Meanwhile, the baking drought ended last night. The decision to bake something was inspired by a photo. Chocolate chip cookie dough was pressed into ... (more)
Recipes for cookies, brownies and blondies
Strictly speaking, brownies and blondies are cookies. Still, most people associate the cookie with a flat, round, sweet concoction. The confusion is confounded by descriptions such as "cake-like" brownies which takes the brownies even a step farther from the definition of a cookie. Just so it's clear, the recipes in this section include all kinds of cookies -- including brownies and blondies. And if you're not familiar with a "blondie," just think of a light-colored brownie.

Nutella and white chocolate cookies
I had no idea that cookies can be this thin and still be chewy inside. But that’s how these cookies are and they are just so good. So easy to make, no decorating required. If you feel like making them even richer, you can spread Nutella on the bottom of a cookie and sandwich it ... (more)
Chunky peanut butter and chocolate candy cookies
Siblings don’t always have similar tastes and preferences. Just because two people have the same parents, were raised in the same house, went to the same schools, etcetera etcetera, it doesn’t mean they’ll turn out the same. Sam and Alex have different tastes in music, in food, in entertainment and in a lot of other ... (more)
Chocolate-topped cream cheese cookies
Have I mentioned that when my daughters are bored, they go into the kitchen to make something? Not a case of food craving since Speedy and I are often left to finish what they have made. It’s more of a need to create something with their hands. And it doesn’t really matter what time it ... (more)
Christmas cookie series: Chocolate crinkles
This recipe was originally published in January of 2007. I am reposting it because, for some reason, the recipe page does not render correctly — nothing shows after the title. Really strange. I’m not sure if it has something to do with the most recent WordPress upgrade or if something went wrong when the database ... (more)
Toffee squares
Last Friday, the day after my birthday, Sam texted me asking if I wanted a cookbook. I said yes. But of course! She said couldn’t find any by Giada de Laurentiis or Ina Garten but there was one by Bobby Flay. I knew she was joking when she mentioned Bobby Flay because he’s one of ... (more)
Butterscotch brownies with peanut butter and chocolate morsels
When Sam found bags of Reese’s peanut butter morsels at Rustan’s Supermarket (Shangri-La Plaza) last Sunday, she insisted we buy one. I’m a huge fan of Reese’s chocolate peanut butter candies so it wasn’t hard to convince me. Sam had a favor to ask though — please don’t bake the morsels until she came back ... (more)
Fruity, nutty blondies
I hadn’t baked in a while. Yesterday, after I was convinced that the technical problems that had been plaguing the blog were finally over, I decided a reward was in order. I was going to satisfy my craving for something sweet. And I did. With cookie squares. Think fruit cake but in cookie form. A ... (more)
Chocolate chip peanut butter brownies
At one c’clock in the morning, TLC shows the same show every weekday — Take Home Chef with Curtis Stone. Although the show’s format isn’t exactly my kind of thing (too contrived), once in a while I do learn something. Like in one episode where Stone made cookies using a basic butterscotch batter but to ... (more)
Blondies with white chocolate and pecans
We were at the Power Plant Mall last night to watch The Green Hornet (lousy movie as it turned out) and we passed by Cooks Exchange for baking supplies — some shelled pistachio (for an ice cream project), heart-shaped mini tart pans (for some Valentine’s Day desserts that I have in mind), souffle dishes (yes, ...
