A family obsession

Veneracion family

I’ve heard other parents say that when kids enter their teenage years, organizing family outings become problematic as teeners tend to prefer to be with their friends — people their own age who share their interests. We’re lucky, I guess. Sam and Alex are 17 and 16, and although they go out with friends a lot, we still get to enjoy going out as a family. Sunday is family day, for instance. It’s not a rule that we set but that’s how it turned out. And long weekends and vacations are anticipated with excitement. Last week, despite the road trip that got cut short, and despite the terrible heat, we managed to have some fun.

I guess part of it is the shared passion for something. Or some things. In our case, it’s photography. The photo above was taken in a place we discovered by chance near Lake Caliraya (I’ll tell you more about it in a separate entry because we took lots of photos there). And that isn’t a “posed” photo. I had to wait until they were all so into focusing at whatever it was that seemed very interesting, without letting them know that I was going to take a shot. And voila! A candid shot that says so much about my family.

And what other interests do we have in common? Good food, of course. And Adam Lambert.

P. S. (on 4-10-10 @10.35 a.m.) They were photographing a spider on a web woven between the tree branches.

That’s so cute. I remember what the Values Educations teachers used to say in gradeschool, that in general, you’d know the children are happy with their parents when they look forward to spending the weekends with them.

And I share your interests, too! Haha!
