The best Father’s Day gift ever

Unlike cable TV, Dream Satellite TV’s decoder is for one TV only. Even with a splitter, it still means only one channel will be viewable in ALL TVs at any given time. It all depends on who’s got control over the decoder. Since Speedy and the girls are always arguing over TV programs, I thought ... (more)

About window casings and architraves

A window is a window is a window? Not really. Look at the windows in the photo above. That space is going to be my office/study. Normally, all it would take is a curtain rod across the top of the window and curtains to block or let in light. But there are a lot of ... (more)

Heavenly home decor

Things I wish weren’t so damn expensive. Most aren’t even locally available. Lamps and lamp shades 1. Hand made lamp shades (wow!) 2. Mibo lamps inspired by British seaside resorts 3. Made with steel, acrylic and wood veneer — definitely Oriental inspired Walls and floors 1. If traditional wallpaper has become boring, there’s Orange Piel. ... (more)

Teriyaki udon

Teriyaki sobaThe name of the dish sounds very Japanese but I doubt if you’ll find teriyaki soba listed in the menu of Japanese restaurants. I sort of invented it last night because I wanted a low-fat meal with meat in it. You know, like making a statement that low-fat means neither meatless nor a total abstention from red meat. I bought lean pork meat a few days ago, sliced it thinly then marinated the sliced pork in teriyaki sauce overnight in the fridge. Twenty-four hours later, I used the marinated pork to make this noodle dish.

Back to school, part 2

In many ways, the school year opening is like Christmas. Children expect treats in the form of new shoes, bags, uniforms, supplies, lunch boxes and even new accessories to prettify books and notebooks. I must admit that I used to be one of those kids. School didn’t seem so exciting unless my parents bought me ... (more)

Cooking ranges: Ariston, Elba and La Germania

The kitchen of the new house was designed with a cooking range in mind. What we have right now is an Ariston cooking hob glued into the marble countertop and an Ariston built-in (electric) convection oven both of which are too narrow for the 33-1/2 inch space allotted for a cooking range. One option is ... (more)

Tuna and fresh mango stir fry

Tuna fillets with mango sauce and slices of fresh mangoesIt was inspired by dish called fish fillets with mango salsa that I saw during one of the rare bloghopping opportunities I’ve had recently. I liked the idea of combining mangoes with cilantro but I wanted that definitive Oriental kick. So, instead of the very Western way of topping grilled fish fillets with salsa, I transformed the dish into a stir fry. Stir fries too greasy for someone on a low-fat diet? With a good-quality non-stick pan, non-greasy stir fried dishes are possible.

The refrigerator that’s right for you

I grew up with a huge frost-free Kelvinator. When Speedy and I bought our first fridge back in the 1990s, we ditched the “frost-free” feature to save on power consumption. It was a 12 cubic foot two-door Kelvinator. That was the fridge we brought when we moved to the suburb in 2001. In 2004, when ... (more)

Can’t decide if it’s gross, funny or downright weird

Warning: NOT for overly sensitive people. One of the greatest pleasures of photography is to chance upon subjects that are naturally interesting. Take the sign at the back of this truck, for instance. The sign says “katas ng kurikung”. Obviously, “kurikung” is a misspelling of “kurikong” which is defined by the Urban Dictionary as “a ... King Bee Chinese Restaurant

Sweet and sour porkIf there’s one deplorable fact about living in the suburb, it’s the shortage on good restaurants. In Antipolo, there’s Vieux Chalet and not much else. I especially missed eating in good Chinese restaurants. There’s Luyong in Marikina and Charlie’s along Marcos Highway but neither measures up to the standards of authentic Chinese grub. But all that has changed. We have a new addiction and it’s called King Bee.

Located along Marcos Highway (between Sta. Lucia East Mall and the Masinag-Sumulong junction), it offers the kind of Chinese food that makes you come back for more again and again…
