A few months ago, fellow blogger and columnist (another paper) Manolo Quezon (www.quezon.ph) wrote something that I would ponder over for a long time. It was during the time when President Gloria Arroyo hired a team of professionals to re-package her image. If you remember, front pages of newspapers had photos of her family hearing ... (more)
Alex’s choco loco
This sinful creation isn’t my doing. My daughter (she’ll be 12 in less than two weeks’ time) did this. That’s why I call it Alex’s choco loco. It’s Swiss Miss and whipped cream with Hershey’s chocolate morsels on top. When I told her it’s probably worth 5,000 calories, she refused to finish her share. Duh! ... (more)
Puto maya
In the comment thread of my Lasang Pinoy 5 entry, Sha mentioned that puto bumbong was not popular in Cebu the way puto maya was. Puto, of course, means rice cake and both puto bumbong and puto maya are variations of the basic thing. What is puto maya? It is glutinous rice cooked in coconut ... (more)
Fish fillets with hoisin sauce
This is an old recipe, a Chinese classic, actually, except that the original Chinese recipe I came across with used pork. I even had an old entry of this recipe but after I transferred the old files to this new WordPress blog, I decided not to reproduce it yet because the photo was not too ... (more)
Storing dried herbs and spices
When you buy dried herbs in the supermarket, they usually come in dispensers. The screw type cover normally has two flip-type openings. One opening is large enough to accommodate a teaspoon and the other has several small holes for sprinkling the contents on the food. There are spices, however, especially local ones, that come in ... Lasang Pinoy 5 : Fruit cakes, a family tradition
I can’t remember a Christmas day when we didn’t have fruit cake. Even as a child, lots of people would give my parents fruit cakes for Christmas. There were times when my mother would order dozens of fruit cakes for gift-giving. The fruit cake in the photo was given by my mother-in-law. She didn’t bake ... (more)
Lasang Pinoy 5: A puto bumbong picture story
I’m late in posting my Lasang Pinoy 5 entry. But after the mid-December database disaster, my priority was to get this blog back online and in working order. Still and all, I am posting my ‘puto bumbong picture story’ as my first contribution to Lasang Pinoy 5: Christmas around the world. Yeah, you read that ... (more)
Ham and chorizo fried rice
It is basically a Chinese style fried rice except I did not add eggs. But the weird combination of bits of ham and chopped chorizo de bilbao is mine. This is the Spanish chorizo de bilbao, not Chinese chorizo or what is popularly known in the Philippines as longganisang macao. This isn’t some attempt at ... (more)
Christmas gift from Mama Sita
More than a year ago, I wrote about how my sister-in-law brought my food blog to the attention of the owners of Mama Sita food company. They sent me bags of their products twice as a show of support for my efforts in this food blog. Mama Sita is not a sponsor nor an advertiser ... (more)
Smoked salmon and tofu stir fry
Smoked salmon is one of life’s greatest pleasures. LOL No, really, I love smoked salmon. Give me smoked salmon and I won’t ask for anything else. It was supposed to be a birthday treat from my husband but he couldn’t find a reasonably sized pack that time. Two months later, I was doing my last ... (more)
